Lambda Probes XJR
Discussion
My local main dealer recently diagnosed the top 2 lambda probes in my car as faulty (2001 XJR). So i rang the garage that i had bought the car from and as a gesture of good will they said that they would send me a second hand replacement pair. I had these fitted (£187)and the running problems remained. The dealer said it was still the probes. I asked them to check as i was not going to lay out £500 for a new set. In the end it turned out to be a gasket leaking in the throttle box. I was presented with a bill for £108. The garage would not accept the responsibility for the mis-diagnosis and would not waive the bill! Opinions please. I also have a set of lambda probes if anyone is interested!
I've noticed that with a lot of cars if you get the Lambda probes from the mean dealer they're fiendishly expensive.
However, there are suppliers on the web that offer 'universal' Lambda probes for around £25.
The only problem being they don't come with the specific wiring harness to fit particular cars, so you'll either have to hard-wire them in yourself or get a tame auto-electrician to do it for you.
Either way it'll be a lot less expensive than the main dealer.
They are 'aftermarket' replacement sensors though, so may not last quite as long in service as new ones from the dealer, although they'll save you hundreds of pounds.
Places that sell universal Lambda probes are ususally suppliers of aftermarket Catalytic Converters as well, such as Cats Direct. I forget the exact web address, but a Google search would find the suppliers.
