...or how long is a piece of string I suppose!

I've seen a 2002 convertible XKR around 70000 miles. It's in a non Jag dealers for 24995.

I'm rubbish at haggling and wondered if dealers get the hump with offers that are too low. If I go in at 23K am I likely to make him dig in and give me very little?

I suppose this is more of a general question, but I put it in here as it's the XKR I want.

Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Cheers

If you go there smiling then you wont get a penny off.

Take a rolled up Autotrader, find the 2 cheapest cars of a similar age and mileage and circle them.

Take a look at his car, say it looks ok and you could buy today but you are supposed to be going to look at these 2. Can he do anything to make it not worth your while by closing the price gap...

You should aim for £21-£22.5k.

It all depends what they've got across the car. I would expect they'll probably have a margin of between £2-4k. Offer them £21k and see where it gets you. Use Bennos advice above by all means but truly, don't miss out on the car if it's what you're looking for. It maybe that they simply cannot give you as much off as you want.

Oh and if you make the offer with a smile, it'll never be perceived as an insult.

Cheers for that, that's a lower offer than I was going to make so I may save more money than I thought.

I wonder how many times I've lost money in the past by starting too high! lol

Mind you, if I was gonna pay over the odds, then the XKR is the car I'd do it for.

BTW; is it the Facelifted 4.2 V8 6 speed version or the older 4.0 V8 5 speed?

It's advertised as a 02 4.0 ltr but it has a grill at front so not sure if that's the facelift model. (excuse my ignorance, a newbie to the dates of the model changes)

I've not had chance to get in touch with them yet about it.

All the XKRs have a mesh grille at the front.

Never-the-less, the book retail price on that car is about £29,500 with the adjustment for mileage. Even taking into account it's not from a main dealer, it still sounds like a reasonable buy providing it's been fully serviced, comes with a 12 month warranty etc etc.
