The last couple of times I have nailed my XJR it has started coughing and spluttering/cutting in and out. Wile it is doing this I get an amber light on the dash. When the car is driven at normal speeds it's fine. This only happns when I have my foot flat to the floor. Anyone know what could be causing this? The car is a 2001 vintage

It's like that but surely not accellerating from 70+ on a motorway? I'm thinking tesco petrol may be wrong.

This amber light, what is said about it in the manufacturers manual?

I filled up with what I think may have been a bad batch of fuel from Tesco a few years back. I was driving an Impreza at the time, gunned it on a slip road joining a motorway, the power delivery felt lumpy, like for a second the engine had mis-fired. Then the dashboard began to illuminate, got that sick feeling I had a really large repair bill coming!

Switched it off, checked all the fluids etc, restarted it and just drove steady for the remainder of that tank. It never missed a beat again!

It can be the TC if the motorway is damp.

The motorway was dry. The engine died for a split second then took off a couple of times before I pulled in and settled to a normal speed (I was trying to leave a mini cooper at the time). The car did it again the next day in similar circumstances. I have a new set of lambda probes that i need to get fitted but thought this only affected the car up to about 3K revs.

Like you, I am considering an XJR as a family friendly replacement for my 3200GT. I came across this very helpful buyers guide which discusses a fault with the throttle that causes cutting out at approx 65mph. Perhaps this is your problem....
