Apart from being a bit quicker what are the benefits of a early R in comparison to the Xk8, or are there any downsides, realsie insurance a little more. Are parts still the same?

Supercharger.

That's a pretty big benefit in my opinion.

No downsides only up
Fuel consumption is a few MPG worse in daily driving, insurance is little difference for most. Engines are different, that extra 100BHP helps. Running costs etc. must be virtually identical.
Has to be an R

8 sounds better IMO as the supercharger tends to drown the V8 sound alot.

Having said that the supercharger whine does have a certain attraction to it.

Not with sports exhausts.

XKR came with CATS as standard, too, right?

My young son thought that the 8 was for ladies and the R for gentlemen!

I haven't had anyone spec an R yet. I've had two chaps spec the XKR-R though. (Black with black and all the options please).

I highly doubt it'll be any earlier than that.
