Can anyone throw any light on the "Detour" function of this marvellous piece of kit....

What is it supposed to achieve, given that the parameters of a journey (i.e. shortest distance or time) have already been set/inputted via another command page...

Never used it personally, but i'm lead to believe that it'll choose an alternative route for you should you encounter traffic etc.

Appreciate your input.

But, the unit will automatically calculate a new route if the car deviates from the existing one.

Clever. Seems a bit of duplication though.
Leads me to think it's there for another reason.

Bugger, no manuals anywhere (they're all stored elsewhere).

Ahhh, the manual....

I've read, re-read, and read it backwards - but it still doesn't make its purpose awfully clear.
The manual tells you how to set/configure it, but doesn't really tell you what you'll achieve, by doing so.

The trick would be getting into the *mindset* of the designer..

I think - though could be wrong - that detour allows you to set another desination mid journey while maintaining the original destination, am going to try it on the way home in the XJ!!

OK try again, allows re-route during journey, maybe to miss traffic etc? Setting a max. no. of miles you are willing to go off course to avoid jams / roadworks. Looks like it is a duplicated function, however wont try and take you back onto the motorway (for example) you have just left to avoid the traffic.

Thanks for the input, guys.......

I tried it out last night on that basis, and I can kinda now see where the system designer may have been coming from, when he modelled the function.

Good to know that I wasn't alone in the RTBM side of things....
