I am moving to the UK and might need a car early on. I have seen several XJRs advertised here for under 5k. Is that a safe bet?

It isn't going to be a daily driver and will do relatively few miles. Should be at least some fun, hence the R

How much fun is the XJR actually to drive? Reliability for one fully maintained? Will it be insurable for someone aged 27 but with no previous UK insurance record?

My Dad's is actually for sale in the classifieds and isn't far from your budget.

In terms of fun, they are very fast & very comfortable so you can enjoy driving them whilst being carried along in total luxury. I don't actually want my Dad to sell his but he's after an estate car unfortunately. He has had several Jags and says this is the best he's owned by far. They handle well as well.

In terms of reliability I think as long as you go for one that has a full service history you should be fine. Remember these are high performance cars and hence will be quite expensive to run (petrol / parts etc) so it's important that you go for one that has been cared for.

Not sure about insurance, worth hoping online and getting a quote.

Go for it, they are an absolute bargain at the moment!

I would be so bold as to suggest that you are likely to have two happy days of ownership - the day you buy it & the day you sell it.......

The straight sixes are bomb-proof and absolutely fantastic to drive. Sure, it's no sportscar - but it's quicker than many sportscars, even when you're wearing a beige cardigan and listening to radio 3 whilst puffing away on a large cigar.

Go get one!

Even the baby 3.2 is quicker than many things that think they are sports cars, and will certainly out corner many, particularly in long sweeping bends like motorway junctions.

Thanks!

Will consider it. How does the steering feel, throttle adjustability etc. work on the XJR?

In my view the XJR is a must. The only reason I haven't had one is that I made the mistake of buying an XJ8 Sport (3.2) .....Marvellous car, but unfortunately wifey discovered just how poor the interior and boot space is when you have two small kids... (Which is why the xj8 went) Otherwise my arse would definately be in one now.

Bought wifey a MB E-Class estate so she couldn't grumble about the XJ

She had to drive my Jag for a couple of weeks between her old car going and the MB arriving. When she drove the E-Class back home from the dealers she stopped half way, "Have they given us the right one, this one seems awfully small" oh well, some people are never happy.
