My XKR has a noise from the right hand rear side, its apparent when going over speed bumps or uneven roads.

It sounds like a loose piece of metal clanking
, not like a thud.

Its been on 2 seperate sets of ramps for garages to look at it, exhaust is rock solid as is suspension, any ideas ?

Cheers,

Craig

Hi Craig,

It is normally the suspension bushings which are worn which results in the clunking etc.. They wear out very easily, I got only 2000 miles out of a rear before now!

Failing that, it could be anything, but would suggest it is suspension related.

Is it a sort of metallic "clank cum rattle" when you go over speed bumps? If so I suspect you have noticed the same strange thing as I have - just about every car I've had (including two jags) has done this and no-one has ever identified what is it is!

It might be the handbrake cable not properly adjusted.

Try putting a little tension on it when the noise happens and see if it stops....it did on mine!

Definetely try this- I had two that needed this adjusting. However, I don't recall pulling the handbrake gently helped with mine, but the dealer picked it up.

I prob didn't explain properly, thatthis is just to identify the problem. I meant do this as you are driving over a rough piece of road while the clinking noise is happening, gently put some tension on the handbrake and if the noise goes away...you have found your cause! Then get it properly adjusted.

Hope that is clearer.

This might sound daft but I had the same with my XJ, we even checked that the wheels were not loose! It turned out to be the board in the boot that was 'stressed' out of shape by heavy cases - honest! It sounded bloody awful!

check the gearbox mounting, its a spring and on my xjr it is so soft that on bumps etc it reaches the end of its travel and clunks. i must replace the spring someday

check anti roll bar bushes. The are prone to wearing and then making a clunking noise.
