Is this likely? That would make the new XKR faster than the Aston Martins, do we really think Ford will allow a Jaguar to go faster than the Astons? I don't think so, I believe Jaguar will be held back from producing the best car they can

Are any of the tuning companies offering 500BHP out of the engine at the moment?
I've seen 450/460BHP upgrades.

Any XKR is going to outgun the AMV8 but at 500BHP it's going to be more powerful than the DB9.

I believe if Jaguar is going to be held back from producing the best cars they can because they mustn't be better than Aston Martins, then basically Jaguars days are numbered.

500bhp XKR won't happen, for the reasons stated. Sad but true.

However, why not a stripped-out light weight GT3 style variant.
450bhp track focused beast, two seats, roll cage, no toys. Then can't be accused of taking sales from Aston.
OK, so it won't compete with a 911 GT3, but, everyone has to start somewhere.

Jaguar have still not given this the green light, but I do believe it will happen. Jag are using Porsche as their inspiration so, yes there will hopefully be this kind of variant.

Aston have put a V12 in the AMV(8), so this has allowed the posssible development of a more powerful jag, although this has not been signed off for the market as yet.

I have long held the belief that this is the way Jaguar should go with the XKR

I think Jaguar should be given the freedom to make the best cars they can or be sold to someone that will give them this freedom.
It seems to me that Aston Martin is being overly protected by Ford at the expence of Jaguar. Aston and Jaguar are aimed at different buyers, Aston at Ferrari and Lambo drivers etc and Jaguar at Porsche and BMW drivers etc.

Quite, and this is how it 'used' to be. The problem is though, over recent years the lines have become blurred, for example: AMV8 aimed at 911, XKR aimed at 911 etc etc.

You only had to watch the top gear to see the power of the Aston brand when 90% of the audience would choose one over Jaguar.

So even if Jaguar were given the freedom, people would still pick Aston. An example of this is in the secondhand market, consider a 95 DB7 compared to a 98 XKR and consider which is by far the better, yet is worth only half as much.
Snob appeal of Aston is so high, people will always prefer it over Jaguar regardless of whether Jaguar is better or not, so let Jaguar make the best car they can.

Why a variant at all? Why is it that Ford insist on the new style XK's to be so much like the old model and so very much like the Aston? If they are to make Jaguar more interesting to the purchaser of that type of car they surely need to make it different. Dare I say it....F Type!
If Aston are so precious then let them have their car, but don't let Jaguar die because of lack of vision!
