S Type 4.0 V8 impending buy !!
Discussion
Hello all you "Cat" owners. I'm a bit chuffed at having just viewed a 2000 S Type 4.0 V8 which I think I'll be buying. It's a 72K miler BUT had replacement factory engine at 48K (Nikasil problem- believe the steel liner engine fitted) It's in fine body condition-no boot leaks no obvious signs of header tank leak/splits & all bells & whistles-Satnav, Mem seats,A/c traction control etc. Got to confess more than a little excited anticipation. Waiting to get garage check over & HPI check etc.
If anybody out there has any views/comments or opinions I'd welcome all replies.

Hi there - an excellent choice. I've had mine from new and refuse to sell it even after 6 years. The only achilles heel IMHO is the 5-speed gearbox as sometimes it is not too sure which gear it should be in - but I find leaving it in Sport mode all the time, even for cruising, seems to iron out the descrepancies. Nothing major has ever gone wrong on mine and it still turns heads. Last year in Normandy a bloke driving in a traffic queue the other way ran his car into the back of the (stationery) one in front as he was clocking the car. To transform the looks get some Monaco alloy wheels - they come up on eBay from time to time. Enjoy!
Thanks FB. Just come back to original post. Now have the beast. What a stonker! You're right auto box does seem a bit "shuffly" at times & like you I think it seems to cope better in Sport. Do you notice much difference in mpg in sport mode. I'd post a pic but can't figure out how to.
Congratulations on a great choice! I find mpg overall is about the same as the only difference is that in Sport mode the box holds the lower gears for slightly longer - once you are in 5th its the same as being in "Normal" mode. On the other hand if you accelerate and drive hard all the time your mpg will suffer. I get 24mpg overall on mixed fodder of country lanes and dual carriageways, (no town driving for me - thats why I have the LPG Astra) and up to almost 27mpg average when touring the Continent.
