Had real problems in getting the correct level in the trnsmission as follows.

I have the Jaguar (expensive) transmission dipstick

When cycling the J gate as directed and ending up in P the level is into the filling tube and way over the 80 degrees mark. However when I put the unit in drive all the fluid disappears from the pan.

My theory is that the transmission is overfilled (about 7 litres put in so far) but this doesn't sit right with the lack of level when the selector is in drive.

This is driving me wild, does anyone have any ideas as to why the level in drive is zero and over the 80 mark while in P?

I'm not sure what trans you have (ZF- 6HP26)? but you should take a look at Gavin Pearson's instructions here:

sorry as opposed to the ZF which I believe is for the XJ and not the XKR. Those instructions I think were for the XJ8 gearbox

Many thanks though I appreciate your help

Too bad, was hoping to get you a quick answer. Both the XKR and XJR now have the ZF trans in them as did the XJ8 (5sp. though). I Googled for how to fill and check the fluid level in the MB W5A580 and found instructions for the Jeep version of that trans but unfortunately they run a dip stick in some of those, for models with no dipstick it says "see your dealer". For fluid level in a Jeep it called for 4 to 6 quarts (service) and 9.5 to 10 quarts (overhaul).

Someone will be along and will know...

The 4.0 R versions have the MB 722.650 box, and from the 4.2 ltr engine both the 8 and R models have the 6 speed ZF.

Have a look at this web site:

Though you do not have the ability drain oil from the converter unfortunately.

Best is to double check your transmission oil leven at a Jag dealer with the WDS, as that can read the actual oil temperature which is important (80 Celcius, which is colder than normal operating temp).

Good luck.

The reason that the level is lower in drive than in park is that the hydraulic passages within the transmission start to fill and charge the clutches. That in turn lowers the level in the sump. When you go back into park, they can drain back, and so the level rises.

Then you have the temperature factor, you put the car in drive, the fluid warms up and when you go to the park position it rises up further because of expansion.

If you have overfilled the transmission then you MUST drain oil out - but if you put it into a spotlessly clean container you can reuse it.

Drain off some oil with the engine off, into a clean clear plastic container. You then need to look at the fluid when there is a litre of it in the jug. If it is extremely frothy it will look like a strawberry milkshake. When it cools and deaerates it will go a deep red.

If you get frothing then drain off fluid cold and set the dipstick level with the engine off (Yes, engine off) to the normal level, then add a litre. That should be enough to have the filter covered. Start the engine, don't cycle the gears, just add fluid in cold until the level is normal. Then switch off. Wait for all the fluid in the dipstick tube to drain down, for everything to settle and then run the correct service procedure at the correct temperature. That should fix things.

As you can tell, it is a procedure that is superficially very easy, yet in reality very difficult to get right.
