Anyone know where to find the filling point for the gearbox and what it looks like, I have been told it is under the plastic engine covers and looks a bit like a dipstick tube but I can't find it. I know its supposed to be sealed for life etc but the change down is a bit rough and fluid is a good place to start.
I did however buy some gearbox fluid £27!!!!! a litre - so I really do need to find somewhere to put it

The weit standpipe is in the sump and the filler plug on the side of the trans casing.
To set the level ACCURATELY you need to have the trans fluid tepid, car idling, on a perfectly level surface and cycle the J gate through all gears, engaging each one. Then put into Park and with the weir plug out put oil in, then drain out. When the stream of fluid starts to drip put the sump weir plug in.
I would concede that it is a bit of a pain to do this, however, most manufacturers who do this because people top up the trans fluid thinking that too much can do no harm, in reality the fluid will just froth up and give poor shifts. On a car using the red fluid the deep red will look like a strawberry milkshake (i.e. pink) and go red after settling for an hour or so.

I had my XJ8 gearbox oil and filter changed at 62k as a precaution.
I bought 20 litres of the correct Esso ATF 71141 for £67 from www.oil-store.co.uk. 01302 723111.
It's gone up a bit in price now but still far cheaper.
Jaguar dealers are ripping people off on this one!
