Just sold my mazzer in order to buy a family car. Looking at an xjr tomorrow 2001 all the toys. Just not sure. I can't think of an alternative to match the mazzer performance. The wife keeps telling me it's an old man or aurthur daily car. Advice please.

As a family car virtually impossible to beat.

I ran one for 3 years and still miss it - a GREAT car

Bought one enjoying it so far. Quick but not as nimble as the Mazzer. Held onto a VX220 yesterday. He lost me round the tighter bends.

I have been running a 6 pot XJR (manual) for 6 years and it is still as sweet as a nut. The V8 has more power and is quicker to the 60mph mark. If the V8 is anything like the 6 then you will rue the day you didn't buy one. You can't expect it to be like a maz but with a family why would you want another maz? Buy the Jag and get a maz when you have paid for the school fees, mobile phones contract, holidays in school holiday times, extended the house to have somewhere to put the toys, university fees and deposit on a flat for them! Having kids is great but the Jag enables you to still have fun with cars whilst maintaining that look which say's "I've arrived" and you will have arrived very quickly in superb comfort. Write again and tell us all how much you loved the new beastie! I bet your wief wont think its an old mans car when she's on her first white knuckle ride around the lanes!

Of course you should! Old mans car? Only if his reactions and ticker are up to it!

What are the running costs on a 6 pot XJR like i saw one for sale for £3,500 the other day and was very temped to start looking at one as an everyday car as i'm driving a track prepaired pug 205 at the moment and am thinking something comfoltable, quick and that could tow the 205 to the track would be nice.

Not too bad - mine has cost me no more than my old Audi 80 to run!! (other than fuel) and the bonus is that it's eligible for classic insurance.

I'm looking at buying a TVR Cerbera at the mo, so if you're interested in buying one, drop me a line. It's just been completely sorted, so will give it's new owner trouble-free motoring!

Shoot me down of you wish for suggesting this, and I am a huge fan of Jaguars, but you can't ignore the BMW 5 Series (530 Sport. V8s don't have rack & pinion steering) for rapid sporting family transport.

Quite, but you're not comparing like for like. 5-series = S-Type equivalent.
