Hi All

Put a deposit on an S Type R today from a Jaguar franchised dealer. Going back tomorrow (sunday) to finalise the deal. The dealer suprised me by saying that they sell the car with a 3rd party warranty (can't remember the name) which was not the Jaguar warranty, but was better and slightly cheaper. Sounds odd to me - anyone got any experience of this?

Thanks

Can't speak from Jag experience (I've been Jaglees for 14 months now), but my current Saab came with Saab warranty (via AA) after a year I thought about renewing it and the dealer offered their own warranty (via RAC) which was about half as much - I scoured the terms and small print on each and couldn't see any real differences, so went with the dealer...

What is the name of the warranty company?

What year is the S-Type R? If it is a series 2 then I wouldn't be too concerned as they are a very good machine. Just check the gearbox functions correctly. Other than that check what labour rates the warranty pays out at. A main dealer charges £100/hr, the warranty may only cover £45/hr.

As with anything, go to the dealer pick up all the small print that goes with the policy. Pop into a Jag main dealer get their blurb and read and understand it thoroughly.

Great choice of car, may I suggest the Racing Green exhaust box upgrade for a truely superb sound.

Thanks for the quick reply....I'm coming from BMW M5 land where the BMW warranty is fantastic, and no 3rd party warranty comes close (most 3rd party warranty companies would not cover an M5)...so it seems a little strange.

I think the warranty company was something like "exapta"....?

Car is March 04

In that case you should still have 12 months Jaguar factory Warranty with the car (3 years)! Therefore you are being sold a policy that you don't need, so get the money off the asking price!

Incidently haven't BMW just changed their warranty small print to render it totally useless?

Er.......Yes.....In fact it's the main reason for me switching camps.....For the M cars it used to be 970 earth pounds (up from 670 the previous year)...brilliant warranty, unlimited mileage....new deal is 900ish for cars up to 60,000 miles - 1800 pounds for cars between 60 and 100k miles, no cover for cars over 100k miles. And a 250 pound excess on every claim!!. I would expect a lot of medium-high mileage M3s and M5s coming onto the market over the next year.

My understanding of the Jaguar warranty is that if you buy from a dealer you get a 12 month warranty, which you can extend for a further 2 years, and then after that buy a Jaguar endorsed "named parts" warranty that covers major stuff....

Would appreciate any views on the Jaguar warranty - especially with higher mileage cars as I do 25-30k/year

All 'used' cars from a Jag dealer will have 12 months warranty, be it the balance of the factory warranty or 12 months of the jag approved warranty or a combination of both. All are transferable to a new owner as they stay with the car. Call a Jag dealer and ask them, Jags do alot of miles so shouldn't be a problem. As for the warrat=nty jag have just retyped it to say they do not cover for any 'known' problems. So that is their get out clause.

Thanks....I think the 3rd party warranty came up when talking about years 4 and 5. So if I buy a 2 year old car, as you say it will come with a year jaguar warranty, then if I wanted a warranty for years 4 and 5 (which I do) the dealer was proposing a 3rd party one, not Jaguar....

Thanks

Got yah. As with any 'insurance policy' read the small print. May be better putting the money for the warranty in the bank and putting towards any repairs that maybe required.

S-Types don't tend to have any problems. With your mileage things may start to wear out but these won't be covered under a warranty anyhow. I'd risk it, as you will have a whole year to shake the car down. Then make a decesion, maybe better to chop it in for another one rather than ending up with a really high milage motor?

Yep - I'm pretty paranoid about decent warranties having just had shy of £20k worth of warranty work done on my BMW M5 in the last 8 months. Never felt the need for them before, but that convinced me that they're essential for big peformance cars.

Cheers
