Well then Jagisti, where do you see the value of an XJS I’ve offered ‘off market’

89 Car
One owner from new
FJSH
42k
V12
Coupe
Metallic dark red
Cream leather
One meticulous owner
Always garaged

In summary as good an HE as your likely to find and mine for £5k if I want it. It seems a reasonable bet but some input and opinions would be very much welcomed.

My plan for the car would be have it and run it for a bit and once the XJ12 (Deauville) clone is restored to think about having it sent to Lynx to be made into an Eventer. I know this won’t be cheep but none the less with a good clean donor car for £5k it might still be a workable project

Personally, I'd always go for a Facelift model for the galvanised body, but since you're thinking of having it converted to an eventer it's probably not so important.

Great cars.

Whatever you do dont buy it if you havent heard it running from cold (on all 12 cylinders preferably) and seen it idle for a good 5 or 6 minutes once warm without overheating or threatening to.

Buy it - there aren`t many nice ones left and they`ll come back into fashion at some point. We had several in the family when I was younger and I loved them all!

Not sure it`s worth converting to an Eventer though - you`d probably be better off waiting for one to become available?

Good points ,, i would say if you do buy it leave it as it is do not convert it ,,, just look at the Suzuki 750 thread to see how an unloved when new ish bike can be worth serious money in a few years time , thats how i see the XJS in a few years

would say make sure you go over the car well .... some were built with care and attention, some where thrown together before dashing to teh pub!!

They are organic ...

Check suspension points, front beam, inside of pannels, everywhere ... dont be afraid to poke underneath with a screw driver.

If this passes check for oil leaks ... PAS, Garbox (Torque Converter and front) and anywhere under engine.

as a rule a leaky car is a rust free one, and leaks are easier to fix too!!

As said before .. hear engine start up from cold ... often the front 2 plugs get overlooked on servicing as they can be a bh to get at due to AC.

if you get the right one, they are fantastic!!

Its not worth the money. A good 1989 Convertible sells at auction for about 6/7K while a coupe even in immaculate condition will only raise 1/3K.

Many thanks for the input so far chaps; alas I only saw the last post after I agreed to give the guy £5k for it which is a sod but given a bullet proof history file with each and every invoice imaginable I may yet escape without a broken arm. You win some…….

It’s actually dark blue but otherwise as clean as a whistle but I do want to have an inspection done prior to buying the car

The owner is a serious Jag man as you’ll see further down this thread so I’m comfortable it’s as good an XJS of this era as you’ll find

As my profile probably indicates I’m based in Suffolk so a pointer or two on who’s best to have a good look at the car and report accordingly would be much appreciated.

And now for the bad news, whilst looking at the Browns Lane Prowler the owner wondered if I was interested in having a look at something else he was thinking of selling. The electric shutter doors rolled up to reveal an absolutely fantastic Lynx D Type which he is also considering parting company with!

It’s utterly and completely fantastic in every way imaginable, all aluminium body (I think they all are) and nut and bolt perfect. A figure of £60k was mentioned and given the recent departure of the Nazi engined slot car I’m struck with an overwhelming sense of patriotism!

I mean you would wouldn’t you! There was I looking at 360’s and GT3’s and suddenly this lunchtime I was hit with this ‘Road to Damascus’ like moment of supreme clarity. I want one and I want it now

Do it ,Do it ,Do it, Buy the Lynx .

Only rarely are the planets aligned and fate grants you the oppurtunity to attain that Special car .

It might never be this way again ,you can find 360's and GT3's all day long - but a Lynx D .

If you can afford it , have it , it wont be long 'till the Summer comes....

Yep it’s one of those strange moments in life when suddenly all becomes clear. The last time I can remember this ort of thing going on in my life was whilst I was trying to get my noggin around the idea of calculus; one moment it looked like a page of hieroglyphics the next it made perfect sense. And so it is with the Lynx D Type

Certainly the suggested price is within the limits I had set myself for the 993 replacement, it’s under twelve hours ago that I first set my eyes upon her and I’m still totally flat footed by the experience.

Lets face it anybody on this forum is going to agree that the D Type is one of, if not the most beautiful cars ever made but its just not something I’d have ever given a moments thought to until today. Although a hell of a lot of dough by anybody’s standards £60k still doesn’t seem ‘Looney Tune’ for a proper Lynx D type? For what it’s worth it also has a very nice and relevant number plate to go with it which I’d value at £5k to £7k bracket.

Once the weather gets better I’m taking it for a drive with the owner which should be better than going to the dentist although the car would need some serious tinkering in the cockpit department as I’m 6’4” and the current owner isn’t!

The car has got £10k worth of engine although I have to confess I’m not sure at the time of writing what that actually gets you

So now what I need to do is some more research on the car, there I was going to do a deal on a £5k XJS the next the shutters rolled up to reveal what’s been missing in my life for the last 36 years.

Perhaps this deserves a thread of its own?

PS Just how good would it be to take her to Le Mans? Hell I might as well die as it could never ever possibly be any better than that

It sounds like you`re sold - as another poster points out you can buy a GT3 or a 360 at anytime (and cheaper if you wait!). The Lynx D is a well respected and pukka item - only the Wingfield D`s seem to have more commercial cachet. I`m no expert on the engine spec`s but the real D`s had wide angle heads and this seems to elevate the sound from fabulous to legendary. Get it checked and get it bought - just imagine the N138..

I don`t think £5K is too much for the XJS if it`s a real cracker - they`re now at the stage where the few goodun`s will start to have a marked premium.

How's it going with the Lynx ?
Hope the Fezza/Porker option's been binned in favour of the
Human Touch ..........
