Coupe or Cabriolet
Discussion
Contenplating purchasing the new XK8 and as mentioned on a previous thread I'm really interested in the residule price for the car in twelve months.
Went to the dealer today and was told allocations for the cabriolet were full (no problem with the Coupe) so could be a bit of a wait. They then made a call and managed to aquire a slot for a cabriolet, for June build. Which leads me to believe that the cabriolet although more expensive could be the better choice when it comes to residules, or could this just be sales patter trying to sell the more expensive car?
I really like the look of the coupe but save more on the cabriolet due to my discount and the soft top being the more expensive car. What would you do?

I had the new XK on eval from Jag. The coupes lines are fab, but if you want an 'XK8' definately buy a convertible. If you want an XKR I'd say buy a coupe.
I think residuals will be no better than the current car, wait list is not very long, but after 12 months of roof down motoring, who cares!

So G, do you reckon the dealer is being a bit economical with the truth about the convertible allocations being difficult to come by?
When you say, "same as the present car" what is the difference in cost on the old car compared to the new model. I'm trying to get a feel as to how much percentage wise it will lose in twelve months?

Tony, the convert will be the most popular, always has been with the XK's. They hold they hold there values better, hence more demand and less build slots available.
As for residuals, I'd be looking at it retaining about 55% of value after 3 years. So getting a XK8 convertible with the premium leather, 20 inch rims and parking sensors etc (must haves) You will be looking at about £70-75k for your new car!
After a year, as long as you have the right spec/colour combo, I'd expect you to 'trade-it' in for £55-60k. (This is a guess nobody knows for sure, but if you look at the track record a new alu XJR which retails for £65k can be picked up now for £25k after 3 years!
Good luck, the new XK is superb, take a chance and prove me wrong!

Cool, what did you make of the new XK during your 'eval'?
All the press reports seem very positive.
That front end kills me though (I'd never admit that on General Gassing of course )

800,
The car was so fantastic, I went and sold my 6 month old XKR (before the rush!). As for 'the face' it has really grown on me, I'm totally smitten, although not with it's price! Gonna wait and see what happens to sales of the thing and what the XKR looks like, how much power it will have (420BHP??) and save some pennies, before I decide about blowing more cash on Jags!!
I thing the consenus is, that the new XK may not have the drop dead gorgeous looks that will have buyers flocking to the showroom, but once you've driven it, you WILL NOT care what it looks like!!

Yes G, same car I live in Germany so can purchase the car tax free + a 13% discount, approx 30% overall. My price was after I had added the extras you mentioned.
Thats why I'm interested in future residules. I have to keep the car for a year due to tax implications. Was then thinking of changing the car to the XKR next year, so tring to get a feel for the how much I'll need to find depending on the price of the XKR.

WOW. Is the 13% discount from a Dealer or just tax allowances, by living abroad?
I think for that money you should walk away and maybe even make some money. Infact if you order a quartz coonv with black premium leather and sound, 20 inch Senta wheels, Adadptive cruise, parking sensors. i'll give you £52k in 12months. Provided its RHD.
Go buy a Convertible then you will have the most saleable car in 12 months. (mileage dependant)

The idea was to sell the two cars I have at the moment SLK 55 AMG & CLS500) and pay a chunk off the mortgage.
Trouble is if I purchase the Jag I will still need a practical car as the only other car I have is my Caterham 7 and I'll never sell that.
I also get a good discount on the RR Sport so may just buy them both and to hell with the mortgage, "Life's to short"

Plenty discounts available and now in another predicament, I can get an BMW M5 for Sep although they are only offering a 5% discount + tax relief of course.
Can't believe this all started with a test drive of the RR Sport. Should of just ordered another Merc and been done with it.
What do you reckon to the M5 over the XK

Well they are both totally different cars though a similar price.
Personally with I would go for the Audi RS4 (preferably the Avant). It's much cheaper and in my opinion better than either of the two you mention. But you really need to decide what kind of car you want as opposed to just looking at cars in a similar price bracket. I.E choose out of 4x4 or 4 Dr saloon or estate or performance car or convertible.
