Anyone gone from a tvr cerbera to an xkr? I love my Cerb, its the most fun car, but I was looking at XKR 4 years old ??...Just wondered about the running costs? reliability? and its practicality....

Costs:

4.0ltr /5 spd Auto 370BHP. Get post 2001 car as had face lift and alot better car. Price around £28-£33k
4.2ltr / 6 spd Auto 400BHP. From 2003. Had another facelift 2004. £35k-60k

Both will lose about £300/month in depreciation. All very mileage sensitive and does it have all the goodies. XKR tend to have most of the options.

Serving about £400 minor / £700 major. Every 10k/12months. Big ones are every 3rd service. (I think)

MPG Avg early 20's for 4.0ltr. Late 20's for 4.2ltr

Buy from a Main Dealer and all cars come with a 12mnth Jag warranty so you need not worry about bills. (unlike TVR's )

Reliability

Early XK's have probs with timing chain tensioners filing. 4.2ltr cars have metal tensioners, the best. Post 2001 have better tensioners, should be fine. get 'em changed at 60k to be sure, about £1k.

Also early XK's had probs with Nikasil cylinder liners which disolved in the sulphur fuels. Cars with this liner have either had engines replaced under warranty or you need a blow-by check done to check if engine is ok. Go for post-2001 car and will be fine.

Differentials can wear out on XKR models, but rare.

Suspension bushing wear out all the time, check for clunking from rear.

Practicality

If their are just 2 of you then fab. kids under 5ft no probs in the back. If you are over 6ft tall as driver convertible has less head room than coupe.

Boot large. Looks are drop dead gorgeous, road users respect the badge!

Loads more info, not enough time.

If you have 2 kids and expect to get them in the car then the convertible isn't really on. We tried to get our two boys aged 4 and 6 then into the back and I could hardly drive the thing I had to move the seat so far forward. It was fine with one in the back, I've even had an adult in the back with the roof down (they have to sit sideways with their feet behind one seat and them behind the other).

I remember going to several XK launch events in '96 courtesy of my Brother-in-law, and at one of them we went for a ride in an XKR convertable. Him being 6ft,6 had to sit in the front, me being 5ft,11 had to sit in the back. Eyeline above the windscreen and a meter behind it equals shoulders upwards in direct airstream - not exactly confortable!

I agree with that.

My boy was 8 when I bought the car and complained vehemently about sitting in the back. Considering I am 5'8" and so have the driver's seat well forward, this tells a lot about rear space, certainly in a convertible.

Otherwise a GREAT CAR.

ps you can have the rear seats removed and a storage area supplied

I did exactly this just over a year ago, and whilst I was in two minds at the time, I have never looked back.

You don't get quite as many young kids pointing at you, and you don't get quite the same noise. However, performance is not far off the TVR's pace, and it is much easier to get on the road. You can guarantee it will start at every turn of the key. It is not quite as thirsty, and you can stick regular fuel in it.
20" tyres are expensive (at around £220 a corner), but that is about it.

I don't know where triple 7 is getting his stuff serviced - I think they might have seen you coming Gareth! I have had two services on my XKR so far, and neither has cost more than £260. (main dealer)

In summary, you will have an absolutely tip top motor in the XK, (assuming you don't get a lemon, but then nobody can account for that!) Go for the newest, lowest mileage you can find, with FSH. As many of the optional extras as you can is good too. Sat nav is nice, but I don't really rate it that much compared to more modern systems. Although it is all down to personal choice, I don't really like the black leather. Watcvh out for milky / fading wood on cars of the 2001 sort of era. Is replaceable under Jaguar's warranty, though.

Thats coz nothing has gone wrong with your car! I have paid around £300 for a regular major service, but it can be more, hence the different estimates. Definately negiotiate.
