Hi All,

Have just taken delivery of a 51 S-Type R, low miles, main dealer history, perfect options. So far have been more than please with the performance and the comfort but have a few small niggles.

Sorry to jump in straight away with questions but I want to go back to the dealer with my facts correct:

1. Does the engine have a cover? Mine is lacking in this department.

2. Is there any way of telling what version of the nav DVD I have. It does not show the M6 toll and certain bits of the A41 around Aylsebury.

3. Has anybody had the 'lurch' problem with the auto box? I think mine has but need to get an other persons view on it. Slowing to 15 - 20 MPH at a junction then re-accelerating there is a definate thump / jerk before setting of. Is this normal?

Thanks for any help.

Darren

p.s. I shall post a few pictures once the weather is better and I can give it a polish ;-)

1. The engine does have a cover, mine does at least!

2. Take it out of the, er, "player" in the boot - it'll have the year on it.

3. I think it is. Apparently there are varying degrees of "lurching". Mine does exactly what you describe very occasionally but is fine 90% of the time so haven't bothered with it. Apparently there is a software fix for it but from what I've been able to establish even that doesn't always completely fix it. If you can live with it, leave it alone I'd say. There's bound to be people here more knowledgeable than me on this subject though.

Hope this helps a bit, and enjoy the car. The steering, cornering and general handling is outstanding for such a heavy machine IMHO, and the acceleration is just mad, especially as it just continues pulling hard way beyond the UK legal limit. Looking forward to trying that one again on Continental trip early next month

Thanks for such a quick reply.

Haven't had chance yet to unleash the beast! But am planning a trip to the 'ring next month

We are travelling to Slovakia for a footy match and the best route happens to go past Nurburg, or so I've told the wife.

Hopefully I will be faster than Clarkson is the diesel

Any advice on tyres, think I will need a set upon my return.

I've just replaced the rears on mine with Continental SportContacts. They're recommended in the owner's manual and are a variety of this tyre specifically for Jaguar use. Or so I'm told anyway. They're great in my opinion so I'd stick with them.

Take it easy round the Ring if you want to have any brakes left for your trip to Slovakia though, while they're well up for stopping it I can't imagine them putting up with much track abuse. Have fun!

In reply to your Lurch problem.

I have had this for the lat 3 years. I wrote the post about the lurch when I was f**ked off continually waiting for Jaguar to fix my car.

I finally managed to get the variant 1 of the lurch rectified, but still occasionaly experience variant 2 (check my website for a description : www.thelurch.com/lurching_zf_transmission.htm

I would recommend you try the latest round of updates along with the transmission oil change.

Even though I mentioned this Lurch 2 weeks after buying the car, Jaguar fobbed me off for over 2.5 years and still won't admit that there was a fault. As you can see if you look at the link above, BMW 5 Series owners experienced the EXACT same problem. So somebody, somewhere in Jaguar was lying.

I will be getting rid of my car soon - god help the poor sod who gets lumbered with it.

I wish you luck in getting this speedily rectified, which is what I always hoped and expected from Jaguar - and ended up being totally Donald Ducked by them.

What you gonna get, hope this hasn't turned you off Jag forever. Jag also deny that the secondary timing chain tensioners fail. Even though they are on their 3rd design and are noe all metal. But will not replace the old for new under warranty unless your engine goes bang. I guess its all about weighing up costs of new engines with total recalls.

Nope, won't go near Jag ever again. Once I'm shot of this car that's it. NEVER again.

Looking at many other options - fancy something a bit more nimble and fun, also something that won't lose £30K after 3 years and 18k miles of lurching, breaking down, leaking, squeaking, locking-up, denial ....

Looking at the new Golf GTi and Focus ST. Same performance figures as my 4.2. More fun. NO LURCHING CRAP GEARBOX/SOFTWARE.

Thanks ....

Knock-on-wood, but it would have to be a catastrophe to beat my Jaguar experience !

I hope this is a one off experience , stories like yours Dave are scary as I intend on getting a jag in the near future.I joined this forum because i believe the proof of the pudding is in the eating , and most members here have eaten , and you cant beat real life experiences (as opposed to a smooth talking salesman!)
I hope this auto box problem doesn't affect the last production XKRs.

Good luck anyway mate

I don't believe that Jaguar is any more or less reliable than other brands.

It is not really the number of faults but how those faults are dealt with. Quickly, smoothly and apologetically - or simple denial, obfuscation and lying.

One thing that is simply SHAMEFUL is the response of Jaguar's upper echelons to clear, concise and valid reporting of faults (not only from me!). How a fault is handled defines a Quality Car.

It seems to boil down to money - just ignore those they can. It makes an absolute mockery of Ms. Boerio's statement about quality on the jaguar website :

"Buyers of premium luxury saloons expect the highest standards of build quality, performance and attention to detail. Jaguar continues to work relentlessly towards total customer satisfaction."

I don't think I could have made it MORE clear to Jaguar that my Lurch was unacceptable. I wrote with others and contacted ALL levels of Jaguar, created a website (10s of thousands of visitors) and hired a lawyer ... yet I was met with at best disinterest. I will NEVER forget that.

How bloody difficult would it have been to actually help me out ??? How much smarter all round would it have been to step forward and quickly help resolve my problems ?

It seems there are far too many aspiring "Apprentice"-worshipping middle managers in the Jaguar heirarchy who, along with Ms. Boerio, have probably never even opened a bonnet and are interested solely in marketing moves controlled with a pen. It is a simple ground roots basic of trading - don't piss on your customers.

My experience was put into sharp contrast when my friend had the steering pump go on his BMW. It was just out of warranty yet BMW offered to pick up the cost of the steering rack (£800). Now ... that has left him feeling very happy about buying BMW and I and many others hear about it and nod in approval with him. Jaguar, you don't have a clue !

The late XKRs have the ZF Gearbox, but I would sincerely hope they have now addressed the Lurch. Good luck.

Wierd the way Jag pick their fights. Just had a mate whose timing chain tensioners were starting to make a racket, 3 weeks after a 40k service. Not picked up untill after his 3 yr manu warranty expired and Jag agreed to pay for it.

Might have something to do with you being out the country. Another chap from Spain whose engine blew, after it had come from a Jag dealer with a problem which was deemed fixed has resulted in them only coughing up 25% of the costs.

The engine in my S-Type R blew just a 2 or 3 thousand before the 60k mile warranty was up! Jaguar replaced the engine promptly and without question. It did have a full JMDSH though. Once diagnosed back at the factory it turned out to be piston ring failure.

Having said that, mine also suffered from lurch 1 and 2, although I lived with it. Other than that no major hassles I love the marque and although I've switched to Land Rover temporarily, I still have that wonderful 4.2 S/C engine in the Range Rover Vogue SE. Oh, and I have the new XK on order and have been invited to a preview at the factory on Nov 2 :P
