Hi guys,

Looking at an XF, Portfolio. It has everything I'd want in one in terms of the interior, and is within budget etc. Annoyingly I can't seem to find any that are diesels or if there are they are out of my price range.

Is the MPG going to be really bad? I do a mix of journeys short and long.

EC Combined (mpg)
38.7
EC Extra Urban (mpg)
48.7
EC Urban (mpg)
33.6

What am I likely to actually get?

Might help if you post the model year you’re after. I’m guessing a post 2015?

As requested by the above poster, presumably this isn't a out you looking to buy the 4.2 V8 or the 3.0 V6? In general petrol is a bit more forgiving than a modern diesel with a DPF of short trips, but if you're driving literally 5 minutes down the road every day, you're going to potentially run into battery charge issues as you won't be replenishing your draw from starting the car by time you get where you're going.

MPG is going to be most influenced by your right foot. A steady and smooth drive, even in traffic, will always yield better mog than hoofing it upto the lights and then razzing it off down the dual carriageway when they go green. I get 35mpg out of my XK, simply because I'm gentle with it and set cruise to 63mph on the motorway.

A while ago I had a XF 5.0 V8 n/a Studio, lovely car, good wafter, 380 BHP for fast action etc, just what a Jaguar should be. Usually got maybe 25mpg on long runs, maybe 20 otherwise.

Had a 2019 XF portfolio 250 for a couple of years.

Loved the car, real world motorway mpg about 36mpg.

Towing my trailer 25mpg

Didn’t really check tootling about but would say 28-30mpg.

Only changed it because it had the light oyster leather interior, which was really nice, but not so good for humping race gear , tools equipment etc in terms of keeping it looking nice.

Assuming your asking what vehicle I changed it for?

A 2008 Range Rover sport, that my next door neighbour was getting rid of.

I do miss that Jaguar!

Its probably better at towing. I started off wanting a 520d, then pretty sure its a V90 and then the XF started poping up on autotrader.

It is, but, the XF was really nice to drive unfortunately my wife wouldn’t drive it because she said it was to long, so she got a new Mazda 2 and I got a banger!

Ive had a petrol 25t for 4 months now and its quick enough (not up my old XJR standard!) but pokey .

I get an average 30mpg around town in traffic , ~40mpg on the motorway keeping pace with the traffic.

If now mostly drive it in ECO mode on the motorway and cruise at 65(or even a bit less) if im not in a rush and my best so far is 49.7 mpg over a 2.5 hour drive with a few miles of urban driving each end of the run.

Not sure how much better a diesel is.

Diesel might be a bit better on fuel but in 2.5 hours there’s a chance it might have broken down twice smile

That's really only fair if you're talking about the 2.0 Ingenium diesel. The 3.0 V6 is a much better engine. The MPG is lower (my partner gets 54 at best in hers) but it's only got the traditional weaknesses like DPF and EGR that all modern diesel engines have go wrong at some point.

nothing wrong with an Ingenium diesel post 2018 with the upgraded chain, or pre 2018 if you looked after the oil level. Most dont.

I thought it was late 19 when the upgrade chain came in ? Looking at BCA online there are quite a few 18/19 cars that are being sold as non runners.
