Afternoon,

I was following a new Jaguar I pace for about 6 miles on various types of road, including traffic lights and a few round abouts. The brake lights did not light up once. Is this some sort of one pedal regeneration braking system ? Do you just raise your foot off the accelerator and the car slows down and the driver didn’t press the brake pedal?

Ive never driven an electric car so I’m not familiar with new braking systems.

The indicators were working fine but I was surprised so see no brake lights during the time I followed the car. The driver/car did seem to plan ahead well and there was no sudden braking but at one junction the car stopped and no brake lights were visible. Driving towards red traffic lights and the car slowed gently to allow the lights to change to green again before accelerating through them.

Faulty, good driving or a fancy braking system ?

Just interested really. Thanks

I recenty while visiting my sister in-law in florida i drove her tesla you hardly touch the brake pedal as soon as you lift off the accelerator the car goes into regen and slows quite considerably so probably the more you drive the more adapt you become and less likely to use the foot brake.

Interesting. Thanks you. So cars can drop speed really quickly but not notify cars behind…. ?

Cars need to show brake lights when decelerating above a certain rate, so lifting off in an EV or hybrid will usually make the brake lights come on, but if the car is set to light regen they may not illuminate.

No. As the poster above explains in more detail. Similar to engine braking.

From memory, 0.3G of deceleration then the brake lights must illuminate.

I can drive my EV on a normal bit of road moderately swiftly without them coming on with a bit of half decent observation. I’d wager a regular ice car with a manual box could do similar.

Of course, it’s a JLR product. Could be broken?

It's not just the I-Pace. The current LEVC electric London Taxis can also slow down suddenly - apparently braking - without showing brake lights. I leave a big gap when following these vehicles.
