I was going to fit Michelin Pilot Sport 4S to my 2015 X250 XF S. However, I've just seen that Black Circles have the new model Michelin Pilot Sport 5 for the same price as the Pilot Sport 4S - am I best to get the Sport 5?

I've also seen that Kwik Fit have them for the same price as Black Circles and can fit them much quicker (I need them fairly soon for an MoT). That said, I've never used Kwik Fit in the past as I've heard so many horror stories! Are Kwik Fit ok to fit tyres these days or are they best avoided?

Thanks in advance.

The PS5 is the replacement for the PS4 the. PS4S is the even more sporty model. If your tracking the car the probably the 4S if just for road the I'd go PS5. They supposedly last much better than the PS4 (and 4S) with no reduction in performance. I've got PS5 on my R53 mini and have no complaints.

It's a 275bhp diesel saloon, absolutely target market for the PS4 or PS5. I don't think you'd use the performance headroom of the PS4S but you'd notice the faster treadwear. Apparently that's the big improvement in the PS5 over the PS4 btw, same performance but longer life.

Kwik Fit were doing an offer on the new Continental ContiSport 7 last week that made them very reasonably priced (Michelins are always expensive), I've put a pair on my XKR and they're brilliant. Tyre Reviews seem to suggest they just edge out or match the PS5 except for being some 10 - 15% behind on treadlife, they certainly hold up to abuse on the rear of my car nicely, I'll put them on my XJ when the time comes I think.

I have the petrol XFS and I fitted the ContiSport 7's all round. I honestly wasn't that happy with them at first, but they've bedded in quite nicely and feel like a really solid tyre.
I can't yet comment on tyre wear as I haven't properly checked them, but they seem to be wearing ok.

We had the XF S Sportbrake. It had Nexen tyres on the front and RoadX ones on the rear. I'd never even heard of RoadX tyres before we got the car and I'd probably never choose to fit either of those brands to a car if I was looking for tyres but to be fair the car was absolutely fine on them. I swapped the fronts to the rear and vice versa after a year to even out the wear and did notice the steering felt somewhat more vague with the RoadX ones on the front but both sets still had loads of tread left after two and a half years and about 15k miles.

TL; DR - even "crap" tyres are probably fine these days.

My wife's Polestar 2 has Continental PremiumContact 6 and my C63 AMG has Continental SportContact 7. In both cases these were what was fitted to the cars when we acquired them but both sets seem to do their job perfectly well. The Polestar doesn't get driven aggressively at all really but my C63 does a bit and the SC7's definitely seem up to the job to me. Either of these would be absolutely fine on your XF S.

Another option; I had the PS4S on my last XKR and they were extremely good but prior to fitting those it had Vredestein Ultrac Vortis on. I'd say the grip on them was also very good, the Michelins beat them a little bit on feedback but there wasn't much between them.

My issue with budgets is that some are surprisingly fine now, I had some Tomcats or something on a V8 XF and they were really ok although no doubt an emergency stop from 60MPH in the rain would take a few car lengths more than premium tyres as per the test results, but I've had some that were absolutely lethal, I've had FWD cars lose the back end at 20MPH on roundabouts on some of these things.

A friend has just put Acceleras on the back on an XJ 3.0d that previously had Rainsports on and the traction control light is like a disco now, and it's not like the Rainsports were top shelf or top dollar. Stuff like Kumhos and the aforementioned Rainsports are really very decent on something like an XF-S though, I'd fit them without hestitation and save £100 a corner.
