Hi,

I need some advice. My wife's 2017 Jaguar 3.0D with only 48k developed a problem while she was driving home. When she got home, we called out the AA. The AA then plugged his ODB computer and said he believes the issue to be with the turbo not performing well. I even googled the error and everything coming up was related to a faulty or failed turbo. I was advised to get the car towed to my local Jaguar-authorized repair centre. The car was collected last Friday, and on that evening, I got a call saying that they’d checked all the hoses around the turbo but couldn’t find any issues. They said they would look further on Monday. Then on Monday, I got a call to say it wasn’t the turbo, and they think the noise is coming from inside the engine. They wanted another 2 hours to investigate, which I agreed.

Then on Tuesday the 20th of June, I got a call to say they couldn’t find any issue internally, and now they believe it is the TURBO! I then queried why they told me on Monday that the Turbo has been ruled out, and for them to charge for another 2 hours looking somewhere else, and now come back to say it is the turbo? They also said they would need another 2 HOURS before they can confirm it is the turbo.

I argued with them on this and then spoke to the manager. He kept on changing his word, and I told him that. I said you originally said the noise was coming from the turbo, and now you’re saying it’s coming from Internally. I even had to record his voice, he kept on trying to move from turbo to something else.

Unfortunately, the vehicle isn’t under Jaguar approved warranty. It was my mistake taking to a Jaguar-approved repair centre. I didn’t want to take it anywhere else because I was worried, I would get this type of service from an external mechanic. Big mistake on my part

The car is still with them. I don’t want to agree to another 2 hours at a total cost of over £1000 and still, they can’t tell me what is wrong. Taking the car somewhere else isn’t an option due to the above cost already spent. I want to know if legally I can fight this. I have already contacted JLR customer services, and even though the lady was very understanding, she even said she tried to get them to remove the other 2 hours they spent looking at the engine and they said no.

This is daylight robbery and I don’t know how they can get away with this.

I don’t know what you mean by “Jaguar Approved “ I’m assuming you mean an Official Dealership ? If it is an approved Dealership then in my experience and as you
are now finding out they are pretty useless . If I were you I would be seeking a good Jaguar Independent Specialist and taking things from there . Where in the Country are you located !

Easy to be wise after the event, but what you needed was an expert diagnostics bod, not something with 'Jaguar' over the door. Having the gear/software is one thing, knowing how to use and interpret it is another.

I made the mistake of taking my Aston to a well-known indy dealer when it had a problem. They got the bill up to about £1200 and wanted to change the spark plugs before I realised they were just guessing, and retrieved the car. Luckily I was recommended someone who is a diagnostics expert, and they found that the problem was in the gearbox, nothing to do with the engine! Armed with his report I was able to get my money back from the first place via the credit card and Section 75.

So maybe you could try the same route... Find an expert, take the car to them and use his report to make the first place look incompetent.

The OP needs to get the car back in a running condition with no warning lights showing and simply off it to the
Trade . Yet another example of a trusting owner financing an incompetent garage to go on a wild goose
chase achieving nothing . In sixties Glasgow I’m proud to say , this Garage Owner would have been followed from work back to his place of abode and dealt a lesson . Sadly those days appear to be over

Had a 3.0d X351 that threw a restricted warning light and errors about boost performance due to a nearly dead battery last month while hammering along the M5 at 110. Done 2000 trouble free miles since with a new battery.

Always worth a go if the battery is a few years old, it can cause the weirdest error.

In any case it sounds like a typical clueless thieving dealer. These utter pricks are a big part of the terrible reputation JLR have.
