(of the car)

Following a recent trip oop north with 5 people and a boot full, each time the near side rear wheel hits a bump in the road there is a knock from the rear on that side. It sounds like a piece of board is loose - but its not. Any ideas?

What do you drive for a start. I take it an XJ? No expert but either worn shocks or the suspension bushings have gone. (or the suspension!)

Sorry, 1999 XJ8 3.2 with 45k and FSH. Visual inspection shows nothing so I guess its off to Arun!

It's most likely to be the rear bushes - there are two main bushes which tend to wear out quicker than everything else. If it is these, then I expect you're looking at about £300.

If it's not that then shock absorbers would be my second guess, but you'd probably have felt the handling being a little funny by now if it was.

Hope you get it sorted quickly and easily.

My XJ6 does the same thing and is as we speak in the garage being looked at. The front left side was doing it before and that turned out to be the shock rubber. Don't let the garages tell you that you can't buy the rubbers without the shocks! Because you can..

Thank God I found this forum, I was beginning to think that senility had finally arrived. I have been hearing bumps in the night (and day) from the rear nearside of my XJ8 (3.2 Sport, 2000, 57,800 miles). Following a fully loaded trip to France I've been hearing strange knocking noises and my local AA Service Centre and Kwikfit (don't ever use them!) could't find any fault(I thought it was the exhaust fouling).
I was beginning to despair as my dear beloved also said she heard nothing.
I also have had a quote (from AA Service Centres) for £400+ - apparently the rear shocks take at least 3 hours to fit!
My question is this.. are the bushes easily available and more importantly could my friendly local grease-monkey fit them?

Well, mine sounded like the wheel (NSR) was about to fall off, turned out to be er, the er, loose spare wheel cover! (the board) The weight of a really heavy suitcase has changed its shape.

I know its a long shot but your 'fully laden trip' rings bells, take the thing out altogether and go for a drive.

Yeah Pettsie, been there done that! I was also convinced that that was the problem but I have stripped boot, removed spare wheel - even boot lid - and still annoying knocking sound persists.
BTW suspension bushes come in pairs to each shocker (cost £20 for 2)

Hi Pettsie! ...Well. You've hit the nail on the head!...

long ago, although NOT for the same reason, I placed a 4"-ish thick piece of foam rubber between the "spacesaver" spare wheel and the underside of the flimsy boot floor because I thought it was weak. Not what you'd expect from: "Jaguar".

From what you say, it seems that this; knocking: "problem" has been going on for some time, and the "Dealers" have been glad to point to the "rear shocks mate! £400 quid!"..............?

MMmmh!.......Don't feel silly Pettsie! ....I think that you've just done many of us a great favour. How many "Jaguar" dealers do you suppopse have blamed: "the rear shocks mate" on a rear boot floor weakness?.................

From ALL of us!.......Thanks for the info chum!!!....

Maybe the chap in the boot is asking you to slow down over the bumps ;-)

Nice thought 8pack but why does problem persist when boot is stripped?

Thanks for comments from Pettsie,Groomi and 8Pack. I have now had time to read all the various threads going right back to the start of this forum. On this vexed question of knocking sounds, apparently eminating from behind the rear seats ( in my case louder on the near side ) I have just one question. Can anyone confirm that replacing the rear shock absorbers and bushes cured the problem?
ie. Is there anyone out there with actual experience of this problem or are all the suggestions hypothetical, rather than based on actual experience?
It does sound as if the boot floor panel is vibrating like Rolf Harris' wobble-board (some of you may be - thankfully - too young to remember that!)

I've never experienced it myself Jagian, yet! But a Rep who delivered some goods to us recently came in a XJ6 with the stuff!.........

After talking to him about "our" cars he mentioned that he had had "knocking from the rear and had the rear shocks changed at an independent locally.

Result?.............Yep! Still knocking!......So there does seem to be something else, maybe something stupid just as Pettsie pointed out........

And don't forget...........he was carting heavy loads in the boot as well. If I ever see him again I'll tell him!

Had quotes from independants/Nationwide Autocentres(AA) and local Stratford-Upon-Avon main dealers - (who were the cheapest). New shockers/bushes fitted and ......... problem solved.
