I’m in the market for a new car, which has to do family duties. First choice is probably a 3 series, but as a Jag man, I’d love to give the facelift XE a chance (specifically the P300 variant). Biggest concern is the boot size: does it work with young children? What about rear space? The pre-facelift had very little room, so I’m wondering if anything had changed in that regard…

Any feedback welcome!

Luggage is more conventional but you can get up to half a dozen under 5s in there if you pack them carefully.

Tempting as it may be, I don't think you're allowed to put children in the boot.

Why not go and see one? (an XE not a child)

I wish I didn't have to say this but....

You really should test drive it before coughing up real money. That engine is a dog and well off the pace, let alone it's reliability record.

I love Jaguar but there is a good reason the XE sells in penny numbers. If you buy one make sure they're giving you a very deep discount, so it's at 320i money.

Or go for an older V6S model and put up with the christmas cracker interior.

The idea of going to a four-pot (currently have a 4.2 litre XJ8) does bother me somewhat…

I’m actually going to look at a 2016 XF S (V6 petrol) at the weekend. It’s bigger and has a proper engine, and it has the upgraded infotainment, making it look less dated.

I just hope it’s not a dog!

Let us know how you get on, these are on my radar too.

We had an XE S in the family when I was married rolleyes and it was a lovely car. Genuinely fast, great handling car. Reliable over the four years of ownership, and pretty economical on long runs (40+ mpg).

It's not just any four pot either, it's a mediocre to poor one. It delivers the on paper figures but the feel and refinement are such that you won't bother. A billion miles away from that lovely AJV8 that's for sure.

I think if you've any interest in cars or appreciation of a good engine the six cylinder cars are the only ones worth bothering with. The reliability of the Ingenium is truly dreadful too.

It's what I have, the 380bhp supercharged version. Makes sure you put the gearbox in S and dynamic on, use the paddles and you'll be pleasantly surprised at the get up on such a big car. The supercharger makes a lovely sound as well. For the first time in a while, I haven't had itchy feet yet and felt the need to look for a replacement, it's a nice place to be.

I’ve put a deposit on the XF S; collecting on Saturday. As is to be expected of a 7 year old car, it’s not perfect cosmetically, but everything seems to work fine.

I found the gearbox a tiny bit dim-witted, even in dynamic mode, but when it hits the power band, there is a noticeable shove in the back: very entertaining! The steering is sharp and direct. The thing that impressed me most, however, was the suspension: it was very good (not perfect) at dealing with bumps, but felt perfectly set up for brisk driving down windy roads as well: an impressive set up from Jaguar.

The interior doesn’t feel that special; the interior in my mark 1 XF felt more special. It is, however, very roomy inside, with a good sized boot. The only potential issue is the shape of the boot aperture: it’s quite narrow.

Overall though, I can’t find anything else that does everything I need it to at this price point, so it’s a bit of a no-brainer!

I assume S petrol not S diesel? The gearbox is likely to get better once it learns your driving style, if the last owner was a plodder it can make a big difference to how responsive it is.

Have to agree about the interior being nowhere near as nice as the X250 XF, it's a real shame.

About a week after I bought my ND2 MX5 in 2019 I was driving through the lanes back from Gaydon and ended up following an Audi A5 convertible. He didn't like a poncy little car keeping up with his powerful thrusting Audi so started driving as fast as he could, and it looked like watching someone wrestle a hippo with it's dreadful body control, lurching movements, and general piss poor road manners.

He turned off and I ended up following a Mk2 X260 XF that was being given the beans and what an absolutely incredible contrast. The way it followed the road, the well damped body movements, the accuracy with which the driver was putting it through the bends was in another universe, it was an absolute class act. Whatever criticisms the XE and XF faced at launch for soft touch plastics and so on they are brilliant cars to drive. I'm sure you'll love it.

This all day long. I had a 2018 XF 25T R Sport and the way it got down the road was sublime it really felt like a big sports car, steering was perfectly weighted and it never got out of shape with the rotten UK roads. Mine was on standard dampers and 20" wheels which is a bad recipe but Jag got it so right. Coming from a F10 5 series M Sport with 19" wheels it was amazing.

Miss that car.

I am looking forward to it, I must say.

Ever so slightly apprehensive about the valley pipes splitting: does anyone know when the single-piece items were brought in? This one was registered in October 2016, so I’m hoping it’ll have the newer pipe!

Yours will be the X260 model, the TSB for this only mentions the earlier X250 so I think you are OK, google the below.
