Jaguar reducing UK dealerships to under 20
Discussion
It’s just been announced that within a couple of years Jaguar will have reduced their UK dealerships from 83 to under 20.
So much for having persuaded dealerships to spend millions on new showrooms. Jaguar want to sell cars themselves directly on line and the dealerships just hand the cars over. So for the customers it’s a lose, lose situation. Unlikely to haggle on price on line and for most not having a local dealerships to call into.
From 2025 their electric only cars will be well over £100k so is this the last roll of the dice for Jaguar?

My local dealer had already split the Sales and Service to different locations. Sytner Jaguar Ascot service is now on an industrial estate in Bracknell which actually suits me as it's closer, I presume they've a showroom somewhere but since they don't sell anything I'm interested in (I prefer the XKR to the F-Type) I've never bothered to find out where it might be.
Having less service locations would be more of an issue for me, owning a car where there's no handy service centre would be pain.
As for selling online, I've been working on the Internet since the late 80s but I can't see myself wanting to buy a 100 grand plus motor off a website.

I think we shall find that many of these Manufacturers will have to follow the Tesla Model to remain competitive in the Marketplace . You will simply browse your prospective purchase in the Shopping Centre .
Tesla killed those shopping centre stores years ago. In future with Jaguar (and others) you'll be browsing/buying online, and servicing will be via collection. As I’ve said in my original post a few days ago , it’s just announced that 83 dealerships will reduce to less than 20 over the next couple of years so the effects won’t be seen immediately.
Hopefully some thorough and knowledgeable independents will come out of this. It would be good for the older cars to have a better network of independents. Some classics, XJS, XJ40/300/308 models have been allowed to deteriorate quicker than similar aged German brands would have done. A number of the independents that I used 20 years ago were approaching retirement then so who has taken over from them ?

Can I ask what you mean by Independents , Sales , Service or both ? The problem is I suppose the traditional Jaguar steep depreciation curve and up until 2003 those awful box sections that rendered any restoration a potential money pit . Preservation quickly became economically unviable for much of the Series 1 and 2 XJ . I suppose you could add the early XJS to this scrap pile . I often wonder , what now is the biggest driver of Jaguar preservation . is it simply age or is it the realisation that what we once had has effectively gone forever and Jaguar now an SUV Manufacturer . Whatever the reason I am glad that its happening and decent prices being realised . Some argue about being priced out of the game but my view is that if you are being priced out of the game where a Jaguar XJ is concerned then you are unlikely to have the necessary money to maintain her in the first place .Hopefully some thorough and knowledgeable independents will come out of this. I dont necessarily agree with what you say about similar aged German Brands , how many Audis can you identify from the early 2000s ? Dull and Soulless designs Scrapyards where full of them before the environmentalist lobby began tidying up the Industry . They never had the identity Jaguar had but what they did have was a perception of quality and well managed Manufacturers .
There are a few Independents both in Sales and Servicing in most of our major towns but I suspect one of the biggest threats to them in the future is the adoption of Electric Vehicles . Enjoy your Jaguar while you can , you have had the best of it .
It´s a bit sad really, but there is really not much point in visiting a Jaguar dealership nowadays. Unless you´re interested in a grandpa Diesel SUV ... just had a look at the current Jaguar website and there is not a single interesting car after the XJ, XK and F-Type are gone.
I lost confidence that Jaguar will thrive in the JLR/Tata setup. And come to the conclusion, that a sale to a potent Chinese investor (e.g. Geely) is in fact the best way out for them. E.g. share the 800V powertrain with Lotus (powerful/efficient) but on a bespoke chassis and focus on the right exterior and interior. Rather more premium though, kind of like a Bentley at 2/3 of the price.
On a different note: Why has Jaguar never put the hybridized Ingenium straight six into the F-Type? Would have solved the CO2 issue, surely? And the long bonnet should have plenty space for such an engine. Just seems daft to kill-off the one and only model that represented the Jaguar spirit.

As the owner of a 72-plate F-Pace SVR, I respectfully disagree ;-)I lost confidence that Jaguar will thrive in the JLR/Tata setup. As I posted elsewhere, I got talking to an external consultant to JLR a couple of weeks ago.
He stated the future plans for Jaguar are well in hand, the downside is, the word he used for their new EV range plan & design was 'Presidential' rather than 'Sporting'.

It's called 'the agency model'.
Mercedez-Benz have already done it, BMW are well on their way to it.
Everyone else will follow. It's the future of buying a new car (whether you agree with it or not)
