Hi all

First post, so please be gentle!
My 2002 3.2 XJ8 (35000 miles) makes an intermittent moaning sound from the engine bay. It's noticable from inside and outside the car. At the moment it only happens when the car has warmed up, and seems to be coming from the front of the engine, possibly the nearside.
The noise (which sounds rather like a dull foghorn, or someone blowing across the top of a bottle!) cuts in at 1500rpm and dissappears at 2000rpm. Above and below these figures it's quiet. I've worked on cars for years, but can't begin to fathom what this is...it's not a "mechanical" noise...I first thought it might be a worn bearing in the electric fan, but even when these are off it still persists. I also wondered if it might be a power steering noise, but turning the wheels doesn't affect the noise at all.
So, has anyone experienced the same noise? A local garage, and also an independant Jaguar dealer have failed to find the problem so far. The tricky thing is it's intermittant, although it makes the noise every day, it doesn't make it all the time every day!
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
Oh, and it's a lovely car in general though!
Mat :-)

My old 1998 xj8 sport did that, turned out to be something to do with the climate control.
Sorry but I can't pinpoint it further.

I can only say that I'm: fair flum-axed Mat!

Maybe 5 minutes on the rolling road (with the bonnet open) at your friendly local MOT station might help?
