Incredible to think back to 1970 when this Car was first registered , in truth it was already a relic from a bygone age especially when compared with Jaguars legendary XJ which would go on to define what constitutes a Jaguar Saloon for the next 40 years . At £45,000 many of us will think this car may be a " hard sell " though I have to admit I dont believe I have seen better .

Wasn't "It's a hard sell" always the problem with the MkX/420G, it never quite reached the level of sales Jaguar had hoped for even in the US where its size was an issue. At least in the UK it never quite seemed to win the hearts and minds of the the public and in the classic car scene there's always been this weird inversion where the cheapest model became the most valuable classic so while Jaguar product range went

mk2 -> S-Type -> 420 -> MkX/420G
the classic car values have tended to be
420 -> MkX/420G -> S-Type -------->>>> Mk2

Good luck to them with selling the car, more & better pictures of the interior might help. At least when I followed the link the top picture section didn't show the interior at all and I had to go hunting right down the page to find additional pictures.

The mk10 and revised 420G in my mind was an odd car at the time but now I can see the point of it. The problem is that really the G should have in my opinion launched the v12 if the engine had been on time. The colour of that one is an issue but imagine a black one with ivory leather and a 5.3 up front. A 530G would have been a car and a half. They were too big for the UK really though

First Jaaaagg my parents ever had , bought from the local auctions for about £450 back in the early seventies, I was about 5 year old at the time and it was the car that made me fall in love with cars. Huge chocalate brown lump of a car, so wide we had to remove the driveway entrance pillars to get it on the drive.

I've aften looked at buying one from the year of my birth as a toy/project but just don't have the space for it at the moment.

This one is strong money at £45k, but it's probably the best one in the pictures I've see, looks beautiful. Doesn't look like it needs a penny spent on it. But there's usually a few floating around for half this price and less, but then they always need something fixing or sorting.

So yes, a hard sell at this money, an easy sell at £30k'ish though I would have thought! smile

A great story Piersman , I have a mental picture of you sprawled in that sumptuous rear , your mother like the Queen of Sheba in the passenger seat and your old man with the string back gloves and soft hat and perhaps a Rothmans hanging from his lip . I was that Council Estate kid sat on the Pavement drinking in the whole scene saying to himself " some day " laugh
Its a wonderful car and like all things in life the best always attracts a premium . That said as you say , there are many decent ones around for lesser money though I imagine the Owners may be paying keen attention to the rising values .

laugh Your image paints a picture, but my parents weren't rich at the time, we were living at my grandad's 3 bed semi at the time, they'd gone to the auction to buy a Maxi!

The 420G happened to come through the auction before the Maxi and it was sooo cheap they couldn't help themselves and had to go to the bank first thing the following day to get a loan. My dad only had it for about 6 months, they literally couldn't afford the petrol.

It was a long time before he could afford to buy another Jag, his next one was a series II XJ, in pastel lavender. Beautiful thing. smile

if i had the space i'd love a manual Mark X in black

they are huge but when meeting clients have that really interesting, but not "in your face look how wealthy I am" vibe that thew same period rolls royce or bentley would have

i think the mark X is better looking then the 420G, yes that car has a great story and is in great condition but as mentioned the colour is wrong and 45k is crazy
