My 2002 s type r has a brake issue in that the passenger front caliper isn’t releasing. No big deal, seized piston or 4. But the more intriguing issue is the brake pedal. Push the pedal and it doesn’t return to the correct position by about 10mm which in turn leaves the brake lights on unless I manual pull the pedal up a bit. Everything was fine until I changed the front pads.
If driven the pads are rubbing without touching the brakes. If I put my foot under the pedal to pull it up slightly it releases the binding caliper.
Never had a car do this before.
Gut feeling is something to do with the flexi hose. They are original and 20 years old now.
Any ideas anyone before I start taking thing apart?

Afternoon

I know this might be a bit of a long shot but on the "Pedal not returning" part, I had something similar on my S type R and it was all down to the adjustable pedals... They were too far back (I think it was a while ago) and the pedal wouldn't return as you said it kept the brake light on and stopped the cruise control from working as well (that was what made me notice it... I hadn't noticed the lights).
Just a thought, hope it helps.

Thank you I’ll have a look smile

Mine has electric column adjust but not the pedals.
Brake pedal pumps up solid with the engine off. Start engine and pedal noticeable drops about 10mm which closes the switch so the brake lights come on. Turn engine off, pump brake pedal again, goes solid in it’s up position, start engine and pedal can be seen dropping again and brake lights on again. Car hasn’t moved in between that process.
I’m thinking out loud, if master cylinder is faulty I wouldn’t be able to pump the pedal solid with the engine off. Likewise with a seized caliper the pedal would still pump solid. But as soon as the engine starts the brake pedal drops. With the engine running the pedal moves as per normal but doesn’t go back to its position to turn the brake lights off. Also cruise control won’t work as technically the brakes are being applied. I’m confused

Late update if anyone reads this in the future.
Simply changed the brake servo for a good used item and brakes work perfectly now.
Also note if you are a bit handy, a Volvo uses the same brake servo just need to sort the vacuum hose as it’s a slightly different position. Volvo item is a fraction of the cost of a Jaguar stickered item. Both made by ATE
