My wife is very keen on a luxe SUV as the next car. She likes Jaguars. I like supercharged V8s.

Looking at used F-Pace SVRs, the depreciation makes them a pretty good deal, even in today's crazy market.

However, I know that there was a facelift last year - how much better was the 2021+ model than the launch model? Is it worth paying (hefty) premium for the refresh model? For me its less about whether the new one has 20hp more (all SVR models have plenty) but did they remove any maddening niggles, the kind that make you hate a car when you have spent big bucks?

Quite a few significant changes actually and that’s reflected in the price difference between the facelifts (which are hovering around RRP) and the older versions which are £10-£20k less.

The interior is the main improvement - it’s a huge step up - and means you don’t have to suffer the old In-Control system which is pretty unreliable. The new Pivi Pro is excellent.

There’s also a new torque converter which ups the torque available in 1st and 2nd (I think) and that shaves nearly half a second off the 0-60. It does have a PPF (or is it GPF?) and that has made it a bit quieter, although that can be resolved in other ways. Some might argue it’s better it’s now a bit less anti social!

Is it worth the extra? Probably, just so you don’t have to suffer the old entertainment system - it’s worth £20k to avoid that misery!

The car itself is brilliant and the noise it makes is hilarious. I absolutely love it. That being said, according to my wife it’s slipped itself into neutral when pulling out of junctions and left her stranded in the middle of the road a couple of times, so it still has that JLR ‘character’! Need to get it looked at.

No worries! I can’t say I’m excited by performance SUVs - the Merc, BMW and Porsche offerings leave me cold because the engines are soulless and they generally look hideous. But the Jag manages to look pretty good and the engine is just brilliant with bags of character.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather have something like a Defender for family duties and 911 for fun but we decided to stick to being a one car household and this does everything brilliantly. Not cheap to run, though! I’ve just buried my head in the sand with regards to the costs but I know it’s a lot. The rear tyres are already looking decidedly worn with 5000 miles on them and fuel is roughly 18mpg - pretty good for a 550bhp heavy lump, though.

Slipped into neutral when coming out of a junction ???? That’s horrifying on any vehicle

Quite! I’ve not had it do it to me but she assures me it isn’t user error. Jag have told me to call Jaguar Assist but, as is always the case, I need the car for a road trip / holiday and don’t want to end up with a diesel Evoque or XE as a replacement.

I absolutely love the car - it’s probably the best I’ve had - but if it genuinely is doing this it’ll be four out of five of my JLR cars that have had issues. I was really hoping this would be an exception.

I've had my MY2020 now for about 18 months and I'd say go for the newer model. There's a lot of improvements over my model but the interior is the main one. It's really modern looking and high quality. That said, I've no complaints about my interior, I think it's actually really nice, but the new one is a definite step up. There's some performance improvements, the 0-60mph time is now 3.8s compared to 4.2s, but you do lose some of the exhaust sound. There was some suspension tuning done as well. Styling wise I prefer the front end of the new model and the rear of the old. But I do wish the option to black the grey trim pieces was available on my model like it is on the newer one.

With the newer model you'll also get more of the factory warranty, mine runs out the end of the year and it's expensive to extend it (but I will).

People complain a lot about the infotainment system, this is my second F-Pace and there were some initial gremlins but were solved early on with some updates. I've not experienced any issues with the SVR, everything works as it should, Apple Carplay connects every time (wired), cameras always work etc. We use the Jaguar SatNav 99% of the time and rarely have issues with it either. The Remote app is very handy and has some good features and works every time but can be tricky to set up, so get the dealer to do it as it needs the car unregistered to the previous owner and registered to you with JLR.

Reliability wise, it's been very good, I had a bonnet catch replaced under warranty and that's it and no issues at all on my first F-Pace.

All in it's a great car, it's comfortable, even with 22" wheels, though the Pirelli's can give a harsh ride which is solved by going to all seasons or Michelin PS4S's. You can do long miles and not feel tired, we often do 9-10 hours trips to France with just a couple of stops and I can average 27mpg on those runs. It's happy bumbling around town but can really get a move on when it needs to. There's plenty of space, it's well put together and I love the driving position. The only car I think I'd replace it with would be an F-Type R coupe but then I'd also get a RR L322 to go with it for practicality.

Hmmm - new or old F-Pace SVR is tricky. I still have my SVR purchased new in 2019 and tested the new car thinking I might upgrade but decided to stick with current car Money no object I’d go for the new car as the interior is definitely an upgrade but the difference is not as big as some make out and the original car still looks good so try both and then decide.

How are you getting on wadeski? A lovely blue one passed me yesterday and made me look here , great road presence.

Looking at both models the changes to the new model make it the one to go for. The new bonnet line, lovely grill and that new interior is worth the price difference alone.

I've had my 69 plate pre facelift for a year now.

It's been great.

I bought it at 2 years old, 9k miles for £65 K, a new one seemed just a bit too rich at the time, although it was possible.

There are a number of advantages of the the pre facelift, all of course in my opinion.

Louder and better sounding exhaust
I prefer the looks front and rear, especially the rear lights
nicer pistol grip gear shifter
screen that sits flush to the dash and not stuck on like an ipad
standard full semi analine leather (not part alacantara)

Mine has a nice spec of:

Radar Cruise & Self Steer/Level 2 Autonomy
Head up Display
Parking assists
Rear Air Con

And of course Apple car play etc

I have't had any issues with the in control system, maybe its because it is well updated now.

I'm sure the new screen is better looking and bigger but there really isn't much the pre facelift doesn't do, also the apps on my phone for remote start and journey logging are handy.

I'm not sure about some of the switchgear in the facelift, some of it still feels cheap.

What is better about the facelift (that I have sat in a few times at the dealer but not driven:

Even better handling due to revised suspension
Better brake feel/power due to the revised brake booster (pre facelift brakes are sometimes not quite as good as could be)
P8 Torque converter

FYI you can also extend the Jaguar warranty up to 10 years.

The sales guy says that the pre facelift is a bit rawer feeling, but both are nice and refined when you want.

I have to say it's such a feel good car, a bit of a hooligan but very practical and refined. It is also inbetween a Macan and a Cayenne size wise, yet spacious inside, a good thing I think.

I came from a Giulia Quad, so it was never going to be as sharp, but oh what a lovely feel good place to be, and still a lot of fun!

They look great, but isnt it a 20k premium for basically just paint?

The (SVO) paint I was told cost's 8k, I managed to see one in Melksham a few weeks ago! I did admire it for looking not too showy. It Is loaded with basically every option on the list. Only 106 staying in the UK. 394 In total.
