So, I have a Jaguar XF 3.0 2009 which I've owned for about 6 months.
Despite mostly reserving it for longer journeys, the amber DPF full light came on on my way to work this morning saying it's full. Work is a short journey (once or twice a week) so a bit disappointing.

This is got me thinking about my long term options.

Question is, how stringent are the MOT checks these days with a gutted DPF delete? Are they likely to get more stringent?
If strict, as in, they actually test for particles being emitted (not sure they do, yet) is it possible to still get the ECU updated for a delete, but fit a proper unmolested DPF for MOT day without updating the firmware backwards and forwards like a yoyo?

I know it's illegal, I know it will invalidate insurance. It's a risk I'm willing to take. The insurance companies aren't going to be cutting up DPFs to see what's inside. Neither is PC plod.

Thinking about buying a cheap used DPF, and either gutting it myself, or just teach myself how to give it a proper clean. Not sure how tricky this is. Or messy.

I would love to know how to flash the ECU if anyone has any details. Can this be done as a DIY, or is it a trade kept secret?

Either way, guess I need to plan a long journey for the weekend. But any current thoughts of knowledge on the above subject would be greatly received. Thanks.

My holf tdi has bloody awful...vw suggest a 20min motorway drive held in a gear to keep the revs above 3.5k to burn stuff off...I'd put a dpf cleaner in the fuel tank while you do this...

If I were you I would be looking at finding something better that suited my needs because these cars are utterly pointless for the short journeys you are covering . In fact its this pattern of use which may be largely responsible for the issues you are dealing with .
Secondly I wouldn't be worried about the MOT test uncovering anything as the test its largely unfit for purpose when it comes to uncovering the actions you are contemplating . Whether the Test becomes more stringent in future under this Government is anyones guess though I suppose most of us would assume it will . Plenty of businesses offer a DPF cleaning service ( one beneath if its of any use ) , I havent used them so have no first hand experience to relay to you though I expect many have . Re flashing an ECU is easy enough done though from memory access to the ECU can be a pain in the XF , the price inevitably from an Indy or Specialist can also vary a great deal . If I were you I would put the car right in the sense of making sure there are no warning lights showing and move her on through the Trade , less hassle and expense in the long run .

As mentioned it's mainly reserved for longer journeys, and I can't see one or two short trips (5 miles each) a week being the cause of the problem. It would seem that DPF full issues is more likely due to an air leak in the induction system so need to get that checked out first.

I ran a 3.0d xf 2010 for a few years. Lots of short trips during the week and longer ones once or twice a month. Never had any dpf warnings. I'd suggest that you may have an egr or other related issue that is causing your dpf to fill up quicker than it should.

I've not had it checked over yet, but did run it down a motorway. After about 2 minutes at high speed the light went off.
I'm still certain their an underlying issue but at least it's manageable until i figure out what it is.
Tempted to buy a smoke machine.......

It may be that the dpf is not regenerating for various reasons.

I had a similar issue with the Mrs car going into limp mode. Changed the dpf at great expense and the dpf sensor (£1200 or so) 6 months later, problem returns. Took it to another garage and they changed the injector which is on the exhaust pipe just before the dpf. Forced a regen on the computer and the car has been fine for 18months since.
