Viewing an F type V6 S
Discussion
Looking at a convertible from a dealer, not main dealer. On paper sounds ok, full Jaguar service history, no advisories but proof is in the pudding as they say.
I’ve thought long and hard about the V8 but at the end of the day I’m not entirely sure that I can justify the additional cost of buying and running one.

I looked at one of these last year. That one had a rattle from the top end of the engine on shutdown - likely the badly-designed coupler in the supercharger snout. Think that was maybe a recall item at one point? Also listen carefully for "slapping" on engine start, that could suggest timing chain issues.
It also had significant bubbling in the paint around the rear side edges of the clamshell bonnet and paint wearing off things like the engine start/stop button and the seat controls and some noticeable scratches around the center console panels. The convertible roof baffled me a bit, seemed to keep stopping part-way through opening or closing, only managed a complete open or close operation once out of three or four tries.
The other thing, as suggested above - it was absolutely nowhere near as quick as my XKR. Not a fair comparison, granted, but given the on-paper 0-60 times aren't that far apart I expected a lot more performance. I guess my frame of reference there may be skewing my perception somewhat. Despite being sold as a sports car it really didn't feel much more dynamic or exciting than my XKR either - also unsurprising as they're based on essentially the same platform. For me it'd have to be the V8 because the rest of the car just couldn't make up for the performance defecit.

I went for a v6 for the same reasons as you & I love it, it’s hardly slow & howls like half a v12 should
Good advice above, paint can bubble above the clam shell side vents. Listen for ticking & slapping. Brakes should be strong & consistent. Check all buttons work, including the air con rotaries, mine stopped adjusting the temp & the whole unit needs replacing.
Can’t comment on the hood as I have a coupe. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

I wouldn’t let that put me off personally and for a number of reasons . As Pursyluv says above it’s not a big deal to rectify should you choose to . Its also more of a maintenance issue than anything else , any idea that the arse is liable to fall out of your FType is complete nonsense . It’s also completely hidden so in no way detracts from the aesthetics of the car .

This. That looks like very minor surface rust to me. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have it rubbed down and undersealed for peace of mind. Both of my XKRs have had a lot more surface rust than that on the subframes and never seen it mentioned on an MOT.Trevor555 said:
I'm sure JLR will be very pleased to hear you think that's acceptable.
Not in my book.
Those bits should have been painted properly in the first place.
Run this one past us again — the bit about the aluminium sills corroding:Not in my book.

Have a good look underneath.
And check the sills while you're under there.

I enquired about a coupe at a dealers a few weeks ago, they put it through the workshop and the car had corrosion from front to back so couldn't retail it and put it out to trade.
There's plenty of stories online if you look, even to the point of JLR accepting it as a problem and rectifying some cars then pulling the plug on it.

I find the " corrosion from back to front " claim a bit hard to take with any seriousness , I think I would want a bit more information on the particular car before I drew any worthwhile conclusion .There's plenty of stories online if you look, even to the point of JLR accepting it as a problem and rectifying some cars then pulling the plug on it.

I am not going to mount any defence of JLR as clearly there are some disgruntled Owners out there who have posted of their experiences that said doubtless there will be many happy unaffected Owners whom one will never hear from and I am one of them .
Its not uncommon early in any Models cycle for teething troubles to present themselves be that electronic , structural or mechanical . In most cases the Manufacturer will make Production Line changes and simply eradicate the problem . Are these subframes a current issue or a historical one ? I havent looked but suspect probably the latter. Just as Pursyluv simply threw £200 at the issue and resolved it others will throw up their hands in horror saying its an £85k car WTF . After many years of owning various Models I take the view its a Jaguar ! As any Model gets older and early F Types are the best part of 10 years old now the car will require maintenance . I do my homework before buying , I read of other long term Jaguar Owners experiences such as 8 bit and act accordingly . If anyone is contemplating buying an F Type of any description simply get it up on the ramp , give it a check and either have the Dealer remedy any issue or simply walk away and thats the same for any car be it Porsche , Ferrari or Jaguar . Fortunately most of these cars will have no issue so I wouldn't let it put me off purchasing one .

That's the sort of corrosion I would have expected to see underneath a well used '70s Renault or Leyland when I was a spanner monkey rather than a '20s premium car.
Given it's a widespread issue there's clearly way too many pennies and grammes being shaved off.
