1996 XJR6 - TRAC FAIL and TRAC OFF

I'm hoping somebody can help me out with this.
Since I got my XJR there's always been some play in the accelerator pedal. A while ago I tried to get rid of this by tightening the throttle cable, but idiot me adjusted the wrong one (there's two cables - one from the pedal to the traction control motor, another from the motor to the throttle body). Now I have the TRAC FAIL and TRAC OFF lights staring at me, but the car acts as though TC is on. I can't get the lights off, no matter how much I fiddle with the cables.
Feeling a bit stupid now
