Ever Tempted By A Daimler

Growing up as a kid they were surprisingly rare in Glasgow as they were largely overshadowed by the Mk 2 and later the XJ6 . This here however is a lovely looking thing and despite its rarity I have to say I think its too much money . I wonder if anyone has ever been tempted by a Daimler ? Perhaps you bought and regretted it afterwards , maybe you simply never noticed that much difference between the two marques at least visually . I have always had an admiration for the 250 V8 , a lovely sounding engine .

I would rather have a 250 v8 over a Mk2 or S-type. The later stuff to me is just garnish and no better than the Vanden Plas allegros etc. The only reason why exist after the Jaguar take over is because the Daimler dealers insisted. The big missed opportunity for me was the SP252

I agree with both of you . Its an interesting comparison the SP250 and the E Type , the latter I guess rendered the former undesirable virtually overnight .
Not SP250 Reddiesel. After the Jaguar takeover William Lyons created the sp252 which actually looks like the later MGB in some ways but it was just as expensive to build as the E type so they didn’t put it into production. There weee only two built as far as I know. This is the one they still have and they registered it in 1968 but it’s from 1962Edited by craigjm on Monday 2nd May 20:48

There's some history of the SP252 on https://www.jaguarheritage.com/vehicle-collection/...This states that the Daimler was taking about 2.5 times as many man hours to make as an E-Type (and they were labour intensive). I'm sure I've read comments else where about the SP250 being really expensive to make.

Lovely Craig , I mention the SP250 as it straddles both Jaguar and BSA ownership of Daimler ( put me right on that if I’m wrong ) and I imagine to any prospective customers must have proved antiquated when put against the E Type . Bedfordshire Police used one to Patrol the M1 in it’s very early days and I have sat in an ex Met one .Edited by craigjm on Monday 2nd May 20:48

It was definitely antiquated because it was a ladder chassis for a start and the early ones used to flex so the doors popped open until Jaguar fixed it. I love the look of the 250 though I think it’s a more interesting looking car than the E-type which to me is nothing interesting looks wise. Jaguar didn’t really want Daimler did it, he just wanted the space and it was the Daimler dealers that pressured as said. It’s a shame they didn’t have the money and vision back then to almost run two lines of cars, Jaguar as they were and Daimler a different range of really posh stuff. As soon as you go down the badge engineering route it’s lost. The car you linked in the OP isn’t a Daimler in reality it’s a trim level on a Jaguar.

Indeed, we can only wonder what a modern pure-bred Lagonda might look like. Now it's barely an 'L'. So many great names, but no room for them all in the days of mass production and globalisation.http://www.jagwestlondon.co.uk/vehicle-details.php...
It was my great pleasure to run into one of these last night outside the local Starbucks . Also on a 98 plate , it had been up for £9000 privately and a
" cheeky bid " of £6000 the owner tells me secured it . The mileometre showed 65,000 miles and she had started off life mixing in Diplomatic Circles . It wanted the body mopping and the sagging headlining attended to and was the same colour as the above car .
Proportionally I always struggle with a LWB X300 , it just doesnt look right with the elongated rear doors . To my credit I told the Owner I would have gone for the X350 version but he wouldn't hear of it , he had spent some time looking for a good one and he was delighted with his purchase .
