Quick question, just dusting our sons model of the XJ220 and noticed these dials on the drivers door, did the actual car have them and what did they do, looks odd having dials there, you can hardly read them when you are driving, thanks all.

I love the fact I can see the XKR (X150) rear haunches in the XJ220. It's my favourite view in my wing mirrors.

The rear, and especially the rear lights in the 220 are utterly naff and really date the car.

I didn't realise how watchable Jodie Kidd was, though. Thanks for the post!

I have some photos somewhere but I see that they're clearly shown in that link above. I haven't driven one but did sit in one at the factory (Jaguar, not TWR) and remember thinking at the time that whilst their location was unusual, it seemed quite a good idea. Have other cars had anything similar?

Gratuitous opportunity for a photo taken at the time.

It does look decades ahead of its peers in that photo.

Wow look at that - XJ6, XJS and an XJ220. Happy days. Cars you can recognise!

Looking at that XJ220 - it seems not unlike an X150 that's been sliced in half lengthways and had an extra foot of width inserted down the middle... spin (the headlights are more Aston but the grille is wrong for that)

I guess it was, but that photo clearly shows how far ahead of it's time it was.

I think the gauges on the door work quite well. They aren't your main gauges so only need looking at infrequently, and you can do so without taking your eyes completely off of the road;

Some bits of the image have been cropped, but this photo is eye level for me when driving a 220, so they are in quite a useful space.

On the door you have;
Top left gauge: Battery Voltage
Top right gauge: Clock
Bottom left gauge: Boost
Bottom right gauge: Gearbox temperature

On the main instrument cluster you have;
Oil pressure
Oil Temp
Water Temp
Then your normal fuel, rev counter, tach etc.

I always feel that they were part of what made it such a brilliant car.

Definitely a place for one in my Euromillions winning garage. Speaking of which, £45m tonight!

Thanks for that, says it all. I recall seeing it at the Birmingham motor show when it came out, it was certainly the main attration, crowd like flies around *&^t to coin a phrase. Think I have only ever seen one on the road, at that was in Banchory some years ago.

Me too - a light blue one behind me coming down the A140 in Suffolk about 15 years ago.
