Discussion
I have some photos somewhere but I see that they're clearly shown in that link above. I haven't driven one but did sit in one at the factory (Jaguar, not TWR) and remember thinking at the time that whilst their location was unusual, it seemed quite a good idea. Have other cars had anything similar?
Gratuitous opportunity for a photo taken at the time.

Wow look at that - XJ6, XJS and an XJ220. Happy days. Cars you can recognise!Looking at that XJ220 - it seems not unlike an X150 that's been sliced in half lengthways and had an extra foot of width inserted down the middle... (the headlights are more Aston but the grille is wrong for that)
I think the gauges on the door work quite well. They aren't your main gauges so only need looking at infrequently, and you can do so without taking your eyes completely off of the road;
Some bits of the image have been cropped, but this photo is eye level for me when driving a 220, so they are in quite a useful space.
On the door you have;
Top left gauge: Battery Voltage
Top right gauge: Clock
Bottom left gauge: Boost
Bottom right gauge: Gearbox temperature
On the main instrument cluster you have;
Oil pressure
Oil Temp
Water Temp
Then your normal fuel, rev counter, tach etc.

Thanks for that, says it all. I recall seeing it at the Birmingham motor show when it came out, it was certainly the main attration, crowd like flies around *&^t to coin a phrase. Think I have only ever seen one on the road, at that was in Banchory some years ago.Some bits of the image have been cropped, but this photo is eye level for me when driving a 220, so they are in quite a useful space.
