I would have been around eleven years of age when the last of the E Types were rolling off the Production Line and to be fair they were a long way from the lithe machines of the early sixties .What followed afterwards was a long period of time where Jaguar never produced a proper Sports Car , instead opting for a GT . Is that fair to say ? Perhaps many will feel that the X150 supercharged variants were more closer to Sports Cars than Grand Tourers though I dont think any of us would argue over the XJS .
Because of the lack of a Jaguar Sports Car in my formative years I have always had an affinity with the Jaguar XJ and one Jaguar XJ in particular stands out from my childhood . It was owned by a local Businessman Michael Moylan who is long since dead and was a Series 1 XJ12 in Silver and it would sit outside in the alley alongside his Furniture Shop in Glasgow . Right at the front of the Shop was a Bus Stop and as I would alight from the Bus I would always walk up the alley and take a look , marvel at its curves and stance gaze inside at its leather interior . Inevitably I would walk around to the front and look at that V12 Badge atop the radiator grill , this was no bog standard XJ6 , this was the V12 , the pinnacle , the ultimate ! I never saw another locally during my childhood and that made it so special that 50 years later I can remember the car vividly and the alley where it sat . As a footnote I was back up there over Christmas and the Furniture Shop is now a Wetherspoons and the alley was full of Biffa Bins awaiting collection . The car in the link above reminded me of that Series 1 V12 and with around 1309 produced in SWB form as opposed to 2474 Series 1 XJ12 in the same form , its even more exclusive
