Running an XKR with the supercharger disconnected?
Discussion
My XKR has a poorly supercharger that's whining loudly even at idle - I'm hoping an oil change might help, otherwise, it might need to need to come off for a supercharger rebuild.
I live miles away from decent specialists, is it possible for me to run the car without the supercharger belt, to get it safely to a specialist?
I don't want to do more damage, but I do want someone who's seen lots of Jags to be the one working on it.
It is possible to drive the car with the Supercharger belt disconnected though I would expect the ECU to register its disapproval by throwing some fault codes and perhaps the car going into limp mode . I do remember a Member on another Jaguar Forum claiming he disconnected the belt drove the car for some weeks and all was as normal . I found that hard to believe .
My Rangey went into limp mode every fifty miles or so when the supercharger water pump was wired up backwards by the factory. A slip into N and a quick off and on again and back into drive and all was good for another 50 or so miles. No damage and all sorted by the dealer.
I'd guess by leaving it connected you are only going to hurt the supercharger at worst and that's going for a rebuild anyway. In typical PH fashion, what's the worst that could happen?

I'd like my mechanic to have a go at the oil change first in case I have caught it early enough. I'm a bit concerned by Jag forum stories of a borked supercharger delivering double-bork to the rest of the engine. It will be interesting to see how you go with that . £500 to £650 are the prices on Ebay for a replacement , clearly at this sort of money I would be going with an Exchange Unit from someone like Paramount , the extra £100 providing me with some security as to the standard of the replacement .
If it's making a noise, it's too late for the oil change. You can only change the nose and rear needle bearings anyway., The middle ones are pressed in and the alloy rolled over during manufacture. These aren't really a fix. I did consider having a go at them when I had mine apart, but decided against it. Sorry, I didn't realy answer your question did I?

Yes - these are the chaps who advised trying one of their oil change kits first because it's whining rather than rattling or clunking. They also do the rebuild if I need to send it away for them to work their magic.Sterillium said:

I suppose the next question is how much do they charge for the rebuild and whats the length of the Warranty ?If I need a rebuild I will measure their offer up against Paramount. I do feel like it'd be worth getting my pulley changed at the same time, which I know Paramount do.
I would prefer not to drive it at all whilst it's whiny, hence my terrible idea about driving with the SC disconnected!
