I've just changed the oil on my 2009 3.0D XF
I bought the oil from Euro Car Parts, using my reg as a search filter.
Ended up buying Shell Helix HX7 Professional AF Engine Oil - 5W-30 - 5Ltr

I knew 5ltrs wasn't enough, but planned to top it up with some more 5W-30 I thought I had lying around. Which I don't. Anyway, when going to buy more I read that for the XF the oil must meet WSS-M2C934-B specification.

However, the oil I have put in the car meets API SJ; ACEA A1/B1; ILSAC GF-2; Ford WSS M2C913-A, WSS M2C913-B

Does anyone know what the difference in these oil specifications are, and what it could mean for my engine if I run this oil?

Plenty forums saying you must use the right specification (or else), but nobody is saying why, suggesting they don't know other than it's what the manual says.

From reading around, I suspect it may be an emissions and DPF related reason not can't find anything clear.

I've gone ahead and ordered a 20L drum of this: Smith & Allan Momentum C1 F 5W-30 - Fully Synthetic Engine Oil - ACEA C1 Low SAPS Ford WSS-M2C934-B

Question is, do I:

a. not use the car for a week, drain, and replace with the Momentum oil when it arrives (may be inconvenient).
b. Run the car with the Shell HX7 oil for a few weeks (treat is as a flush almost) and then change it.
c. Don't worry about it, run the oil for a year (I don't do more than 4000 miles in a year) and swap it then?

From memory the oil specified for your car is a 5W 30 Fully Synthetic Oil such as Castrol Edge Professional or the Shell Helix Ultra Professional . Personally I wouldn't worry about what you are currently using , I think there is much written about Oil suitability which is more marketing than anything of actual substance . An Oil company launches a Brand of oil at the same time Jaguar launch a new Model , they engage in a marketing exercise and suddenly Jaguar " recommend " Joe Bloggs Oil . The Dealerships are all in hawk to the Manufacturer and they do likewise . Back in British Leyland days it was who could pay the highest " bung " to climb aboard the Supplier gravy train . Dunlop Tyres standard fitment on the X150 are a good example , utterly useless as any Owner will tell you . They were obviously the most competitive supplier at the time which allowed Jaguar to improve their margin . Nothing to do with suitability .

I have a 2011 XF 3.0D. Changed my oil couple months ago. This is exact spec you want, C1 for the DPF on these

Normally I'd agree, but the XF is known to have two oil-critical issues that I wouldn't want to be playing Russian Roulette with. Firstly, the DPF will clog if the wrong ACEA rating is used - 'low saps' isn't enough. Secondly, the grade is critical on these engines with respect to the crank bearings.

So it has to be ACEA C1 and M2C934-B.

I've been alternating between Mannol 7723 and Granville Hypalube in mine, changing it religiously on-spec (annually) even though I'm doing a fairly low mileage. Oil change is so easy on these cars with a vacuum pump so no excuse.
