A lovely looking thing this and given the numbers produced rare too . My trouble is always the same when I look at second hand or restored Steel Bodied Jaguars and thats the fact that for me at least , the aluminium bodied cars make much more sense as a second hand buy . Whether its corrosion in the rear wings of a Series 1 XJ12 or those dreaded Box Sections at nearly 60 years of age I want Jaguar Ownership as hassle free as possible .The trouble is that you find yourself looking and then you get seduced . About time I put the kettle on laugh

For an asking price of £19k they should have replaced the headlining first.

Nice car though. I wouldn't be put off by a steel body Jag - the aluminium body cars have plenty documented corrosion issues too, both native aluminium corrosion and galvanic corrosion where steel bits are involved. Contrary to what most without any metallurgy knowledge believe, aluminium corrodes with enthusiasm also - it just turns to white powder instead of rust. The trick is to maintain drain holes and try to keep cars away from salt.

In the interests of saving the planet, salting roads should immediately be made illegal and roads plowed only, and any drivers who get stuck or crash when on summer tyres instead get a substantial fine. Our cars would all last a lot longer and the massive CO2 emissions resulting from manufacturing new cars can be avoided.

Yay, an XJ40! I had one as my first Jag and it was lovely. I had it for 18 months and the only new part it needed was a headlamp bulb. A greatly under-rated car IMHO.

Is £19K a fair price for that model? My 4.0 Sovereign would be about £995 by now!

An under rated car for sure but would you say that aesthetically its one of Jaguars finest efforts ? Its good to see any Jaguar well preserved but I wouldn't be in the market for such a Jaguar at this money . I would be looking for an X350 Portfolio or a Super V8

Not in the E-Type category I agree, but certainly finer than the current XJ and modern offerings bar the F-Type.

I'm normally a fan of quad headlights which were an XJ tradition, but on the XJ40 I think the rectangular ones look better. How I wish ride comfort was in fashion.

A rare find and the interior is in amazing condition. Wonder if they were also available with a manual transmission. However 251hp is hardly going to tear your face off. If it has to be a Jaguar Sport model, I would go for a XJR-S 6 litre.

... great looking wheels though!

The Chairman of the Board does not wish to have his face torn off. It's simply not done old chap.

It's never been out of fashion among those who prefer old Jaguars rather than new ones. smile

Surely the chairman's choice would have been a LWB Double Six. Even in the early nineties, 251 bhp was not enough to qualify for the fast sedan club: Mercedes (AMG) had the 6.0 "Hammer" with 350 hp, BMW the M5 E34 with up to 335 bhp. The "Chasseur Stealth" bi-turbo XJ40 would have been more like it with 340 bhp, but unfortunately Jaguar didn't introduce forced induction until 1995.

Therefore, in my opinion, the Jaguar Sport XJ 4.0 was quite an oddity for its time. Not playing down this nice example though, it seems to be in tip top condition.

I think you have a bit of a point about the Jaguar XJ Sport Models . I always found them a bit of a contradiction in terms , Supercharging is the only worthwhile Sporting addition to an XJ Jaguar .

I just stumbled across two Chasseur "Tornado 450" advertised on Pistonheads:
https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/12620429

Looks like only two cars were ever built based on a X300 XJ with two turbos and bored out to 4.2 litres. There's also an old Top Gear episode with Clarkson reviewing this very car:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNJ5fARN3EM

Looks wise it's a bit of a marmite car though. The front fascia reminds me of an 80's Aston V8 which is not a bad thing. Unfortunately, the condition of the cars doesn't look too good. And of course, the asking price is far from realistic.
