Extended manufactures warranty are rarely good value, but the wife has just extended her lease to 5years 70k

2.00 EPace 180d, was due to go back next spring, but lack of value in the lease market, or en extra 150 pcm to replace like for like, made her pull the trigger.

Am I worrying unduly, or are Jaguar diesel engines now made of sterner stuff ?

35 miles commute, 70 mile round trip so it’s getting a fairly good run out most days with a mix of motorway, A and B roads.

Ps apologies for all caps title cut and pasted without thinking

How much is it on the car? I have it on my RS but it's £1300+ per year - not sure if I will renew this year to be honest as the car has never missed a beat. £150 a month extra gets a brand new car. If the warranty is only £400 then fair enough, if it's near anything like mine - I think I'd take the new car.

The one time I did enquire about a potential claim, they were very good to deal with and you can use independents. They didn't pay on the claim though!

I wouldnt bother extending the jag warranty. I did a few years back at a cost of £1100 on a 58k miles car.

As soon as it hit 60k they refused to cover most stuff (that i had used it for previously) as at that mileage the car was considered by the warranty co to have reached the end of its life.

Things may have changed but this was a Jaguar branded warranty direct from Jaguar but they then just passed it on to a 3rd party. Jaguar backed the warranty co in saying the car had reached the end of its life at 60k. I had some very expensive paper!

I shouldnt complain too much as i did have about £10k of warranty work in the first year.

Warranty direct is looking like half the Jaguar option and at around 300 per year might be worth it …

I thought warranties from the likes of Warranty Direct were basically a total waste of time and 'not worth the paper they are written on'.

Hi Matt, please point me in the right direction, of bad reports, or recommendations, I never really considered an aftermarket warranty or indeed an extended manufactures one, this is all new ground for me.

My wife has no mechanical sympathy and drives with radio turned up to 11
Could pop a rod through the block and would only notice when car had stopped moving.

Lost a TT engine at 77k so I am being cautious based on previous experience ….
I wasn’t worried when her car was going back to the lease company at 30k and in warranty.

I had the Jaguar warranty on my X150 until renewal time this year. As with you it was over a grand a year, but covered all the potential expensive items. I've been lucky (perhaps) and it's not required anything.
But this year it was ten years old and the full warranty was no longer available, only a cut down version which only covers £3K in any single case and a max of £6K a year and they still wanted well over a grand to provide that cover. A simple bit of maths seems to indicate that they feel there is a 1 in 3 chance of something major happening to a car which had still to hit 30K miles.
Apart from anything else, I think this is just not good PR for the company, it says to me that they have sod all confidence it the product they build.
LadyB8 has a Merc, the warranty on that is a bit cheaper, but then I guess the car was a lot cheaper when new. But if you pay monthly for the warranty they don't cut you adrift at 10 years. If you pay yearly then like Jag they won't sell you a new warranty once this car is 10 years old, but if you're paying constantly it just keeps going. Last year it needed a lot of work doing and they covered it all, well all the bits that weren't obviously consumables.

There’s a reason for that!

The official Jag ones are pretty good. The dealer will sort claims just like the original warranty, as will the indys. Of course they are a complete waste of money, that’s what all the nay-sayers say. However for an outlay of about £3k over three years, I’ve managed to get about £25k back, so I’m not a nay-sayer. Your choice, but I’d stick with the Jag one. The warranty direct will have stupid claim limits.

I've never personally had an extended warranty - manufacturer or aftermarket, so my opinion is based purely on other peoples experiences.

But what I gather is that the official manufacturer extended warranty is very close to the original warranty that comes with the vehicle, with more or less the same items covered and very few limits. Also if the vehicle has been serviced properly and on time within the dealer network there is little wiggle room for a valid claim to be rejected.

On the other hand the aftermarket warranties available seem to try to get out of paying as many claims as possible. They often have claim limits to get out of paying for big repairs and also sometimes won't pay for consequential damage caused by a single failed component. A lot of them will only pay a low hourly rate and garages are often not willing to do work that is subject to an aftermarket warranty claim.

Personally I wouldn't purchase anything other than an official manufacturer extended warranty.
