My car has a very loud whine coming from the engine bay. It comes and goes but started a few months ago. It doesn’t seem to have any impact on performance. Any ideas?

I know its a faff but drop off all belts and see if noise disappears ,may be alternator bearings,power steering pump,it will not cause ny damage if only run for a short while .

Could be the aircon compressor. Mine made a horrible whining noise when it was on the way out.
It disengages at low and high revs.
The threshold was close to tick over on my X300 (only a 3.2) and it made a difference whether it was in drive or neutral.
Also it cuts out at higher revs if you're giving it some beans, so the whining stopped.
