Afternoon all,
I've just agreed to sell my MX5, and am looking at getting a 2017/8 > Jaguar XE or XF once prices have returned to some sort of normal.
I would only entertain petrol with my usage pattern, so either would more than likely be equipped with the 2 litre Ingenium Petrol. It would more than likely be Portfolio spec, despite being the grand old age of 30 I want something nice and comfortable for my daily driver, though I'd be open to an R-Sport if it isn't too crashy.
Has anyone had any experience with either and what they were like to live with day-to-day, or if anyone has had any experience with both that would be even better!
Thanks in advance

Don't get me wrong I'd honestly rather an X351 or a Gen 1 XF, but I want something new-ish that I don't need to worry about too much. I know I can get an X351 with a Supercharged V6 or V8, but choice is very limited.
I have access to these when I want something with a bit more charisma, although I'd argue the old green smoker probably has a slightly harsher engine than the Ingenium lump.

"Something nice and comfortable as a daily driver"
Have you considered an XF 5.0 V8 n/a Portfolio? Rare car here (not marketed in UK but available; was the standard car for the USA market). I had one for 2 1/2 years, loved it and still wish I had it. Just what a Jaguar should be: lots of performance and a great cruiser.

Ive had both, I currently have a 2019 XE R Sport at the moment, 2.0L petrol, back end of 2019/up to March 2020 I had an XF .
Both are company cars but my own choice of car, so I could have picked what I wished, within reason of course.
I do around 30,000-40,000 miles a year in my cars (well, I did pre covid anyway)
With the XF, I covered some 19,000 miles in 5 months.
Main difference is seating for the rear seat passengers, if you have people in the back a fair bit, the XF will be much kinder to them and you.
XF boot is usefully bigger. If you can, get a car with the fold down rear seats, thats a nice bonus.
As it is, the XE is a bit more nimble to get around , a tad easier to park, no real difference in the front to speak of, I prefer the look of the dashboard in the XE
Coming from an MX5( my Mrs has a 2008 MX5 as a daily driver) an R Sport will feel like a Rolls Royce!
You have a lovely and exciting selection of cars for the weekend, I have some other toys, the 2.0 engines and autobox are more than fine to waft around day to day, its a different and nicer alternative to a BMW to swan about in, take one for a test ride and make up your own mind.
I love mine anyway.

I recently switched from a 430d into an XF for the family wagon, and opted for the P250. I was a bit worried about trading down from 3l 6 to 2l 4 but to be honest, apart from missing a bit of acceleration when I put my foot down I have been really pleased with how it is to drive around. Very comfy (even with ridiculous 20” wheels) I feel like I’m serenely wafting about rather than trying to get everywhere as quickly as possible, but when you want to go, it goes (and sounds pretty nice although I’m confident there is some piped audio trickery going on). It’s thirsty (34mpg on a good run) but I’m not too fussed about that, I expect the XE is rather less so given the size difference (mine is Sportbrake).
I test drove an XE P250 as they only had that available at the time and it also was comfy but didn’t feel as refined as the XF (although it was a trim level or two down from my HSE). Granted, mine is the facelift with the new interior but engine wise I think it’s the same.

There’s always the XE S
3.0 supercharged V6 and 380hp from MY17
We’ve had one for a couple of years and it’s a peach. Effortless when pootling around, goes like a stabbed rat when provoked. Been really surprised with the economy too, long trips see high 30’s, even 40+ on the OBC. It’s actually the wife’s, but any excuse to drive it and all that

My father had two in a row and loved them. Bit of a Jekyll & Hyde car. 3.0 supercharged V6 and 380hp from MY17

I run an XF S Portfolio 3.0 Diesel as my business motor. I had an XE R Sport for a day and was really grateful to get back into mine. The 4 pot petrol unit lacks the punch of the V6 diesel and the supplied car's interior was an ocean of black plastic. Didn't feel like a Jaguar should. By no means a bad car at all, but it just didn't impress. I wouldn't completely dismiss the big diesels either, they're quite refined compared to the 4 pots and quite economical.

Each to their own but I couldn't pay that sort of money and end up with a 4 cylinder engine.
My thoughts too. Whenever I take a look on Autotrader at £10-20k XFs at least 95% of the ones that come up for attention are 4 cylinder diesels, which for that sort of money really won't do.
Thank you all for your input, much appreciated.
I really, really wanted something properly 'Jaguar' in more than just comfort and dynamics, and a 4 cylinder XE or XF probably wasn't that. I had looked at the V6s, but they did seem quite a premium compared to what they were 18 months - 2 years ago (in saying that I remember them being a massive premium when new, like £15k+ more from memory?!).
Always good to hear real experiences from PH'ers, so thank you all again.
However for the last 3 times I've decided to buy a Jaguar to use everyday, I've ended up going for something else.. My criteria was for a quiet, comfortable car that I could enjoy every day, I wanted a nice stereo, comfy seats and preferably something with a warranty.
I've ended up with a diesel Land Rover Ninety that is older than me (and I'm not young any more).. What is wrong with me
