Morning all.

Have run and been very happy with a 2016 XJ D R-Sport for the past 3 years. Pre COVID I was putting +20K miles a year on it so diesel made sense.

The 'new normal' will be majority work from home so this will drop to <10k a year. This has got me thinking about an XJR!

Has anyone gone from a diesel to an R? On paper the mid gear pull of the oil burner is similar and I've never found it lacking on the motorway and caught my Porsche 997 driving mate off guard a few times out of the tolls in France.

As the XJ is a quiet cruiser is the only gain from the R the odd giggle from the noise of the engine? Any other benefits?

The cost to change to a similar age/mileage car would be almost double the vale of my R-Sport.

I have a Porsche Cayman for B road fun so the R would be a 'daily' and South of France/Italy cruiser.

Cheers

When you talk about the "" R " I take it you mean an X351 Jaguar XJ R rather than the earlier more Traditional Models ?

The R is a different animal.
The diesel is a good car, but no character.
The R will break traction easily and the mid gear pull is much harder. I’ve just sold my 2014 R and it’s such a great car. The petrol XJs will hold their value better aswell

The old story about not liking the X351 shape always held me back from purchasing one of these but you cant argue with the power of the XJR engine
I must admit I get totally confused when Jaguar apply an R to almost every Model , I often have to check the BHP figures before I know what I am looking at .

Thanks for the comments. I'm one of the few that thinks the X351 is a great looking car, especially the rear 3/4 (apart from the black C pillar).

Having mulled over Masser Quatroporte, Bentley Cont ext. and having run a D for three years I think I'm much more likely to stay in the Jag fold (touch wood) considering the wallet draining potential of those.

Think I've now convinced myself to hunt out the unicorn of an XJR575 with an ivory interior. Current XJ is British Racing green with ivory interior and headlining and is a lovely environment and not a big black hole like the majority.

Cheers again

I totally agree with this. I had a Jaguar XF 5.0 V8 n/a, Portfolio (actually a Studio model designation whatever that is), BRG, ivory interior, sun roof etc, fully loaded. Lovely car, good wafter like all Jaguars should be. Unfortunately, wife's arthritis made entry/exit a problem so it had to go, otherwise I'd still have the car.

FWIW, we loved our XFR, and having p/exed it for something else we miss it. Circumstances are such that we could have kept it, and so I'm looking for another. Quiet, comfortable, shatteringly quick. About the only downsides were the size of the fuel tank, lack of a rear wash/wipe and the small boot access.

You know with your diesel when it's getting to about 3000RPM and it finally feels like it's REALLY coming on song, and then it shifts and you feel a bit "oh"? Well the XJR just keeps going, pulling harder and harder. It's dramatically faster than the diesel, as you'd expect given it has nearly twice the power....

Do it, you'll love it.

Report back when you try one, I'd love to hear what you thought. That 5 litre supercharged engine is a total dinosaur now but it's incredible; I'm eyeing up Supersports now, they are the only things that could tempt me out of a twin turbo V12 S-Class.

Will do. Keeping my eye on here and Autotrader. I really don't want a black car or full black interior so choice is limited at the moment. Also want the updated infotainment as this will be a keeper until im forced into electric (although I do think electric power should suit the big Jag cruiser paperbag)

I agree, Jaguars saloon cars have had some great engines in them over the years, but their greatness is the way they effortlessly move the car. In a luxobarge you don't want to hear about, you want serene progress. When I put my foot down, I want it to go, I don't want to piss around, I don't want it to make a fuss, I don't want it to shout about, I want to lunge down the road.
I seem to remember reading a comment about the old Bentley turbo engine about not want to race the boyracers, just wanting to get out there in front without needing to make any effort.
I see this as being a very different requirement to the engine in a sports car where you want more involvement with the engine.

Agreed - I saw an interview with Jim Randle where he said the V12 was the closest they could get to an electric motor, and with the three speed slusher it wasn't far off, going from walking speed to 100+ in one gear!

All this positivity towards an electric XJ makes you wonder why the new CEO killed off the project. Possibly the only new car I was following with interest. I really can't see the point of the Rimac et al.

I want my Jag to give me the 'grace, pace and space' and I think an electric XJ would have been perfect. My D goes about its business well enough but its a bit agricultural when not at 70 on the motorway. I think the XJR will satisfy the inner child for a while but at the end of the day, If I could get the Torque of the D with the '.....and it keeps going' of the R without any fuss then I have ticked all the boxes.

I have a 2007 base Porsche Cayman 2.7 that I keep mechanically 'tight' for fun on the B roads. You need to wring it out to get the best of it but the noise, interaction with the manual gearbox and brakes all done at sane speeds feeds my ICE needs.

Still need that giggle of firing up a V8 to take the family out for a bit though biggrin

OK, I last drove them back in 2006, but Lady B8 has the Mercedes equivalent engine in her W212, the E350 diesel and I've got a 5L XKR. On paper the torque figures are similar the diesel has 620Nm the Jag 625. The Merc goes very nicely, but at no point does it ever go like the Jag does. Foot the to floor on the Merc is like a gentle brush of the loud pedal in the XKR. The supercharged engine is always just there the moment you want it, whereas the turbo diesel is something you often have to wait for, either for the turbos to wake up (much worse since the firmware upgrade to deal with the cheat code) or then for the engine to get into its stride, whereas the with the XKR its always more of the case of trying to maintain traction.

And is it in that unicorn "old man" (pah!) spec of dark red/green/blue exterior with ivory interior?

I have an XFR. Unlike all the diesels I've driven for 20 years, the torque is instant due to supercharging. 50-70 in 1.9 seconds!

Then it just keeps on going, and going, and - oops, still pulling hard through 110mph (tried on an airfield of course). 5 litre V8 supercharged hard, not diesel hard, and I've been a champion of 6-pot diesels in the past.

Just do it smile

It is very much "Old Man" spec smile Cobalt Blue with two tone Jet/Ivory Interior (a bit of research showed the XJR was not offered with full Ivory, only two tone Jet/Red or Jet/Ivory).

On the way home from the test drive I stopped off in Oxford and purchased a Flat Cap. I already have some rather dapper driving gloves I kept from my departed fathers Jag Glovebox. I may wear a cravat when collecting the car and channel my inner Paul Newman in the iconic Le Mans picture when any BMW 'M' or Merc 'AMG' pull alongside with their obnoxious popping and farting exhausts. smile
