I have a petrol XE with an erratic idle, not just when cold. There is also a yellow engine management light showing that according to my OBD reader is due to the idling speed.
The question is, will any competent mechanic be able to trace the fault or will I need someone particularly familiar with Jaguar XEs? From what I've read, if I take the car to a Jaguar garage they'll charge about £200 to 'diagnose' the engine light then want another appointment to actually fix anything. But there is a decent independent Jaguar specialist within reach, plus plenty of non specialist garages.

Idling issues are well known on Jaguar XE Models as a quick search of any Jaguar Forum will confirm and generally down to one or two main causes .The question is, will any competent mechanic be able to trace the fault or will I need someone particularly familiar with Jaguar XEs? I would generally steer well clear of Jaguar Main Dealer servicing and I say that for a variety of reasons and cost is only one of them .
A competent Mechanic may indeed find the issue but personally I would be building a relationship with my local Jaguar Independent especially if the Car is slightly older and you are expecting to hold onto her for the foreseeable . They shouldn't be much if any dearer than a normal Garage so its a no brainer in my opinion .
