After deciding to have a more realist budget for a weekend car.

I have Only started looking at XK’s MK 2 recently, they seam Amazing value for money now ! I have seen a few with circa 80,000 miles for around £10k. Just wondering if there is anything I should be checking or aware of at the sort of age and price trance. From what I have read they tend to be very reliable ? Any tips , hints or advice appreciated.

Which one? The original one or the second one?

The original one was based on the floor plan of the XJS IIRC so is pretty ancient, although beautiful.

The gen 2 was a much more modern aluminium-based construction and generally has much newer tech.

My BIL had one of the latter for several years and it didn't give him any grief. My neighbour still has a mk 1 XKR which also seems to have been trouble-free in the main.

Lovely things. I'd go modern just for peace of mind.

FWIW my BIL's was a black on parchment 4.2 with XKR rims. Gorgeous looking car.

He ran it for 4 trouble-free years. The standard infotainment was utter pants but the rest of it was great.

Jaguar's naming is pretty dire and guaranteed to confuse. I think the XK X150 should be called the XJS Mk3, but that's probably just me.

Anyway, this book might be handy for you: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Jaguar-New-XK-2005-2014-E...

I ran one of these for many years and recently sold it . I think due to the fact its aluminium and how its constructed your first concern should be the Bodywork and whether its been smashed , pay particular attention to the boot floor and the cross bar by the radiator . The good news I suppose is that any bodged repairs should be glaringly obvious . Wheels should ideally be unkerbed and fitted with good quality tyres preferably all the same make . Research any possible purchases MOT History as this can be both a good indicator of the sort of use the car has had and also an effective bargaining tool should you decide to buy . Be aware of the different Specs available and also that they can be extremely colour sensitive , Botanical Green and Silver are for example best avoided . Wooden Dashes can also be a mixed bags make sure you can live with the veneer colour , aluminium is also available . For me its Paperwork , Paperwork with these cars , naturally as they get older and lose value maintenance can be skimped as People attempt to run them on the cheap though these sort of cars are easily identifiable . Engine wise not much goes wrong as a quick read around the various Forums will confirm , they do however suffer from warning lights mostly due to poor Battery Condition . I would advise finding a good Specialist for Maintenance rather than using a Jaguar Dealer and I would also make yourself known on one or two of the Jaguar Forums , inevitably you will find someone living close by who will gladly accompany you to view any potential purchase . Over 15 years now since the X150 introduction they are still a beautiful and seductive thing to look at , this however is what you have to guard against , buy in haste and repent at leisure as the old man used to say . I am MK based and happy to travel in a 30 mile radius should that help you in any way . I see you are in Glasgow my old hometown , 8 bit who I am sure will be along in a bit is the man you want .

Check that the A/C blows cold and that the carpet in the passenger footwell is not damp and has no traces of having been damp. These have an issue whereby the A/C pipework that gets blocked up over time and it's a dash out job to fix.

The gearbox is not sealed for life (regardless of what Jaguar says) and will ned due a flush and refill at the milage and age you are looking at. Make sure it changed into Drive and Reverse smoothly and that the changes aren't rough. If the 'box is on its original oil, it may not be as creamy smooth as it once was but will be restored by the aforementioned oil change. If it's too rough, damage may be done already and I'd walk away.

Otherwise, I cannot think of any major design issues or failings with the 4.2 engine cars. Remarkably well engineered.

This is all highly subjective. I personally think Botanical Green looks great - very Jaguar. And whilst silver is always a boring colour for a car, it's also the colour Jaguar used to launch it, so it's actually the car's default shade in Ian Callum's eyes. If it's good enough for him...

I'm sure the OP won't have any trouble working out which colour and interior they prefer, but I'd caution that 4.2 cars had some things on the option list that really should have been standard on such an expensive car. Heated windscreen, Alpine stereo. If you want these options, looks for the Alpine logo on the speaker grilles, an additional button on the bottom right of the dash for the windscreen heater, and a 2" bulbous lump on the tailgate/boot for the DAB radio. The fancy seats have additional rotary controls on the doors' control pads, again an option on early cars.

I currently run a 4.2 XKR and it has been an absolute peach to own over 4+ years.

I had the dreaded leak into the footwell; dash out; now perfect.

A/C serviced and ice cold.

Am just about to fix the electronic handbrake - they need to drop the diff, so another expensive fix for a cheap part fail.

All done by Prestige Jag in Paisley, who will be a useful contact if you buy an XK.

Epic cars and great fun to hustle along.

I will definitely miss the Jag when she goes next month!

I've not sold it, and wont be advertising it for sale. Have already been offered a decent price from WBAC (of all people!), so will chop it in or sell to a dealer.

Don’t be blinkered thinking it’s all aluminium so it will be fine. Check the body closely for filiform corrosion and every steel bit bolted to the body for the standard tin worm. Get the gearbox oil changed and changed properly not just drained and refilled. A lot will be left in the torque converter without the proper tools for the job.

The Jag indie in Paisley has the specialist machine to suck all the gearbox oil out and replace.

You are right, there is a lot of steel under the ally body, and it's jag steel, so will corrode. Waxoil/Dinitrol time to be on the safe side, especially in Glasgow aka RainTown hehe

Indeed, aluminium corrodes. My car (also 2006) has developed three patches of bubbling paint about an inch across, two being on the door bottoms (which I understand is common). Getting them fixed next week.

Of course its subjective , I dont believe I intimated otherwise . The fact remains however that both colours are a hard sale come exit time . Ian Callum is totally irrelevant as is the launch colour , I doubt few who have owned or admired the vehicle would disagree that Silver is a pretty anonymous colour for an X150 especially when sat against some of the darker metallics , including Ian Callum .
The heated screen on all of my cars was operated via the Touchscreen , you have completely lost me regarding this additional button ?

Mine has front and rear heated screen buttons lower left next to the big round knob. Or am I missing something?
