We're looking at an XKR right now, it's 2013 with full service history and only 18k on the clock, it looks in mint condition, has had 3 owners and has obviously been well cared for as it comes with a cover as well, the price is right at the top end at 40k but it's probably worth it.

We're going back tomorrow and my question is should I be looking at anything specific as this will be my first ever Jaguar and I know little about them and their possible faults.

PH did a buyers guide

Lovely cars, but listen out for rattles from the supercharger (possible bearings on the way out)

Also have a chat with Matt from Spires, you need the rear boxes to be replaced with his version.
I can promise it will put a smile on your face, every time you plant your foot to the floor.

Does sound like strong money to me, I'd personally be concerned that a car of that age with such low mileage may have poor battery condition, dry seals in the aircon system, possible issues with the electronic parking brake etc. Modern cars are designed to be used, not to sit idle. If the car is right for you and you're content with the price then fair enough but I'd want to ensure that whatever warranty you get with the car will cover pretty much everything.

These generally wear miles pretty well; I bought my first (a 2008 4.2 XKR Coupe) with 72k showing on the clock but not in the condition, other than some expected wear in the driver's seat leather it looked very well kept. It looked even better by the time I traded it in. I currently have a 2009 5.0 XKR coupe which had 47k when I bought it and 57k now and in VGC. The point being, buy on condition rather than miles. I would think you'd find an equally nice car with a few more miles for quite a bit less but as always, anything is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it.

A 2013 car won't have the aircon drain issue, the part was changed to a new design which eliminated that issue early in the 5.0 cars' run. I was unlucky, mine has the old part and is going to a specialist next month to have it replaced, which is a dashboard-out job.

2009 5.0 XKR ex-owner here.

Great cars.

Headlight fault with mine 20 miles from the Jag garage that I bought it from. Drove back and got it sorted. Battery issue I think.

Other than that no other major issues apart from.......... make sure it has good tyres on it. The traction control was quite relaxed to say the least and with 510 bph and God knows how much torque it will spin up the rears in 4th quite happily with the mildest of provocation if on less than premium rubber and perfectly dry roads.

The engine is awesome and it is huge fun to own one. If you are not used to very powerful RWD cars just be aware that there is a fair bit of insanity just waiting to be unleashed. A greasy road, a gentle corner and some mildly injudicious use of the right foot has the potential to give you a nice view of where you have just come from.

That said I do live in Scotland and drove it through the winter. I quickly learned to use the paddles rather than allow the auto to decide what gear to select.

Awesome cars though and what a noise.

I'll probably get another one at some point........and put some good tyres on it.

Just to update this, we looked at the car yesterday and quite liked it but as has been said it although it looked in mint condition it seemed like strong money so we felt we had to do a bit of thinking about it.

We were both busy today so I phoned the dealer this morning to say we were interested and would be coming for a second look tomorrow, he called me this evening to say that someone from the other end of the country had bought and paid for it over the phone without even looking at it.

We would have probably bought it tomorrow but that's the way it goes, lesson learned, leave a deposit next time.

40k should get you into an XKR-S

£40k seems expensive for 2013 XKR, even if Jaguar approved, with a 2 year warranty.

Run out Dynamic R or XKR-S maybe....

Way over priced in my opinion and the fact the car comes with a car cover indicates absolutely nothing . Personally I am always wary of such low mileages in such a car , £80 is all it costs to have the mileage altered which takes all of 10 minutes . You havent said if this is a Private or Trade Sale either way I wouldn't be parting with any wedge till I knew a bit more than you clearly do .

Agreed, but it suggests that the previous owner cared more than most about the car.

Maybe, but then you've borked the history and MOTs - unless you're going to fake all that too.

Personally I wouldn't pay £40K for any XKR as that's DB9 money.

Not necessarily , there are no MOTs for the first three years of a vehicles life so no need to fake anything , Service History at that mileage will be minimal too .
Totally agree with you about the price being asked , at £40k paid thats a major hit come resale time

£40k is easily in DB9 territory and almost bringing you into Vantage S territory.......I should know, I keep looking!
