Good evening all. Ok after having owned a 993 for 4 years (sold in 2008..... if only I knew), a Ferrari 348 for 8 years and then most recently a 2006 Vantage for 4, I would like a F Type. I had the “misfortune” of sitting in one, and after hearing the engine which made me smile like I was a teenager again I was hooked. So that night advert placed and within a week Aston gone and I’m on the look out.

My budget is £30kish (won’t borrow so only a little flexible on this) and would just be interested in hearing people’s views on what to look out for (tried the search engine but doesn’t seem to be working) and possible running/repair costs as I only will do about 2k a year in the car.

A bit of history that I never drove any of the above before purchase and I’ve not driven the V8.... it’s always been a case of I liked the looks/sound impulse purchase as this will be..... so that means the V6 is out of the question no matter how strong the argument for itsmile

Thanks in advance for reading

Hi, I have run a 993 and a V8V and also a V8 F Type so I get the appeal!
The V8 F type is a wild thing as a 2 wheel drive. I loved it, but on a damp day it could easily go sideways down a straight road!
Mechanically mine seemed very strong and I had no problems over 2 years. It gripped better, rode better and was quieter on Michelin p4s rather than the OEM Pirelli tyres...but no surprise there!
Some cabin fixtures are a bit fragile like the central air vent that rises out of the dashboard, but that was fixed under warranty.
The only thing that worried me was the surface rust on the underside that mine developed.
Otherwise a great car that I really enjoyed.

I read a thread on here the other day- Saying that a Jaguar software update gets rid of those wonderful cracks and pops on the overun..!
That would spoil the car somewhat for me.

Sorry.. I don't have the link.

£30k will be right at the bottom of the V8 market, high-mileage cars and/or private sales. Earliest V8s ('V8S' as opposed to just 'S' which is a V6) are all convertibles, then from 2014 the V8R coupe came out, extra 50hp and quite a few more options as standard - probably looking at £35k+ for those.

Range of colours, wheels and cosmetic options down to personal preference e.g. if you can live with Firesand Orange!

They're fairly well specified as standard (satnav is showing its age now, however), the coupe even more so, key options to evaluate for your circumstances would be:
  • Seats - the normal Sports seats don't have much lateral support, Performance ones are much better and there's a memory pack with extra adjustment available. Heated seats were optional but very commonly fitted.
  • Automatic lights/wipers
  • Front parking sensors and rear camera
  • Keyless entry
  • Sound system - there are a couple of uprated Meridian options, or use your right foot biggrin
  • Wind deflector if a convertible
  • Switchable exhaust - a bit pointless as you can put the car in Dynamic mode or pull a fuse to achieve the same effect.
  • Configurable Dynamics allows you to choose sports settings individually for steering, gearbox, suspension and throttle.
Quite an event to drive, much more so than my previous Porsche Cayman, but nowhere near as precise - there's no hiding the car's weight! More than enough power to overwhelm the rear tyres in most conditions, as above budget for replacing any stock Pirelli P-Zeros ASAP to improve grip though. All are 8-speed autos and the gearbox is pretty good, if not quite as sharp as my Cayman's PDK when pushing.

Annual servicing is reasonable, though spark plugs are due replacement at 6 years which will be a few hundred on top if not done. You'll be lucky to get better than 25mpg and full whack on the road tax. Generally reliability seems pretty good, the engine is used widely across other Jags and Land Rovers, and in a V8S is a good 100hp down on what a tune could achieve (wouldn't bother though!). I think you can get a proper Jaguar warranty applied - mine was approved used - which is about £1k, maybe not worth it for your intended low usage.

Thanks all for your replies. Colour I'm quite flexible on... probably just not the orange or White, and probably realize now that its nearer £35k I'm going to have to spend. Your other points ref Sat nav (its got to be better than the Aston surely.... in old fashioned road maps were better!) and camera etc I would need as its tight getting into the garage. There is a green V8S on a well known site (at a Dealer) and also a Blue V8R privately that look nice. Just need to haggle! Interesting about the Spark plugs as the ones I'm looking at are 6 years old so useful to know. MPG is better than the V8V as I was getting 18.

So onwards with the search thanks again

Running a 14 plate V8R coupe here - wouldn't say the software update nerfed the sound of mine.

This is the forum to join if you want a UK perspective on ownership: https://www.ftypeforums.co.uk/

The biggest issue I've seen (and experienced) in recent times is the rear sub-brace recall/ replacement.

Fully recommend one, having come from a C63 coupe ('11) and a Z4M Coupe ('06) beforehand. You've owned and driven some thirsty stuff before so you won't be surprised by the cost of ownership.

Servicing is reasonable.

Unfortunately the engine is the weak point. Cost cutting in stupid places means massive bills to replace cheap components that have failed due to manufacturing or design failures.

My XFR-S has clocked up about £22k worth of warranty of which about £15k is on the engine.

Don’t run one without a decent warranty unless you have big pair of balls.

Bloody good fun still and is still the best car I’ve owned.

Keep us posted on where you end up, I’ve being keeping tabs on the V8 market for about 6 months, I’ve now sold the Tamora so starting to look with more interest, unfortunately the current crop for sale on Autotrader don’t do it for me, I’m sure they’re all decent cars, but I’m very particular on colour/wheels/trim, if I don’t buy correctly I’ll just end up spending a heap of money making it look the way I want it, my budget is £35k, but I set the search to £40k, you never know what deals there are to be struck scratchchin

Me too, and I spent most of last year looking - was pretty easy going on colour itself (just not black, and I didn't see an orange one in person to decide), but the wheels and trim had to 'go' together with the paint. I'm not a fan of the convertible's standard Turbine wheels either, they're just too fussy with all those broad spokes.

The worst one I saw was blue-grey, with all black exterior trim and the standard silver Turbine wheels plus a white interior nono. At least it didn't have a red roof, I suppose!

Happy with my BRG example and the nice, standard mix of black and silver trim/wheels.

i'm looking as well with the same budget, some nice cars out there but they don't have the spec i'm after. Seen a pic of an orange one, only 3 ltr but looked great with black pack

That would fit the bill quite nicely if it was a V8, still, it's a great looking car.

As a very satisfied V6S convertible owner, I can't stop looking at this.... same colour as mine...shame it doesn't have the panoramic roof

I'm in the market for a V8 Coupe, simple question should I go for the 2WD or the AWD?
Basing this question on I have driven a 4.5V8 TVR Cerbera for 15 years so I know what a high-performance RWD car can do and I also had a V6S Coupe for a year which I did 8k miles in but sold it because it wasn't as much fun as the Cerb.
