On my X350, the drivers seat reclines itself when the car is switched off - it doesn't do it when the car is powered. It doesn't fall all the way back, but it is noticeable.

When I turn the ignition on, the seat doesn't automatically go back to where it should be (the steering wheel does), but it does when I press the relevant memory position button.

Is this likely to be one of those early indications the battery is on the way out? As everything else works fine - memory position, seat motor etc. Only when the car is off/locked does the seat recline a bit.

If you have the steering column and pedal adjustment rotary control set to auto, it should move the seat back and the steering wheel up and forwards when the key is removed, to facilitate exit & entry, then reposition them correctly when the key is placed in the ignition. Depending upon the individual memory settings being paired to the keys, the return position will vary according to which key is being used. If some / all of that doesn't work, it's probably a defective driver's seat module, which will offer a diagnostic code (sorry, I can't remember the #).
I find the whole feature irritating, so set the rotary control to either column or pedal, which disables it.
Ignore me if I misunderstood your problem. smile

Yep, all set to auto, and all motors work fine. When I turn on the ignition the wheel goes back into position, but the seat doesn't move. When I press the relevant memory button the seat goes back to it's preset position.

It's just this random reclining when the car is off I can't understand

I did wonder. Google isn't throwing up a definitive answer, are these coded to the car or will a secondhand one from eBay do the job?
