Hi all,

I could well be out of my mind here, but I'm considering changing my 2017 GT86 for a facelifted X250 XF, more than likely it will be the 3.0 diesel. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of my planned usage of the car?

My commute is under 5 miles each way, but this is going to be a maximum of 1 day a week due to home working and impending E-Bike purchase. Most of my regular trips are under 10 miles, but I also do a 240+ mile round trip every 3-4 weeks. My annual mileage will probably be 6-7k.

From what I’ve read, the facelifted cars seemed pretty well screwed together but the only thing that concerns me is the DPF. Are my 2hr+ trips every 3-4 weeks going to be enough to negate any issues, or am I asking for trouble?

At this point I’d normally say to anyone with this usage profile that they’d need to man up and buy the petrol, but I'm considering the diesel for 3 reasons.

1) There are so many more to chose from than petrol
2) Friends have had the 3.0 diesel engine in Land Rovers for the last 7 years, and even a diesel hater like me has really warmed to them. They seem very resilient, cost effective to run, and are very smooth for a diesel.
3) I already have an XJR-s that bleeds me dry anytime I even think about it, and have use of a 2011 XKR-S whenever I need my crazy Supercharged fix. I’d like to think a diesel XF would be the sensible daily driver that won’t cost me the earth to run!

As a footnote, I’ve also considered an X350 XJ (I’ve been threatening to buy one of these for about the last 8 years), but all of a sudden these have gotten quite expensive for full history low milers, hence me now looking at XFs.

I am probably rightly going to get flamed, but I look forward to hearing anyones experience and whether or not I've completely lost the plot!

Thanks smile

Not worth the hassle of a diesel with that mileage.

I've had two Jag diesels and neither had any problems related to the fact they were diesels. I did about 10K a year.

My concern with your short mileage is whether the DPFs would regenerate.

They are lovely cars but with most of your trips being less than 10 miles I suspect you would be seeing the yellow dpf full light or worse red dpf full on a regular basis. You might just be lucky and catch a regen with the monthly longer trip but it's not really worth it based on your current driving routine.

My first diesel was a 2.7D S-Type. Once I'd got accustomed to the lag, eg when joining a roundabout you need to aim AT the car going round not behind it), I preferred the power delivery to petrol. Effortless mid-range torque - which is where you do most of your driving. Pressing 'resume' after a junction overtook anything, yet at tickover you couldn't hear the engine running from inside the cabin.

By contrast the 3.0D XF that followed it was horrible in every respect so I hope the XJ is better.

For that usage pattern buy a petrol engine and avoid dpf/ad blue headaches too. smile
