They are wonderful, beautiful cars, massively underrated and have loads of scope to repair and upgrade. Because there are so many, there is a thriving enthusiasts and spares resource.

A few "teething issues" but to be expected, rear tyres were perished so replaced with a new pair of Pirelli P zero's, and just been to my local independent to investigare a recurring "gearbox fault" message Suggestion is the cable from the J gate is out of alignment, or the rotary switch on the side of the gearbox is duff, but a whole load better than a new gearbox !

The X100 XK8 and XKR are such beautiful cars. Far nicer than the X150 that cam after. If the oil and filter have not been changed for the automatic gearbox, get it done. The service kits are cheap and readily available.

It's going in Tuesday next for a full gearbox service, including fluid and filter while the fault is investigated.

I would get the diff oil changed too - nobody does that, but it will prolong its life massively.

Lovely cars, disagree totally with the statement about the X150 above, they are both beauties in their own way, both very different. I chose the X150, but it was a close run thing

And Jaguar dealers will refuse to do it, because it is ‘sealed for life’!

Disagree. When I asked about a gearbox oil change for my S Type sealed for life box a few years ago it was easy to get a quote from a local JMD.. I guess some JMD's do and some don't..

I had a X100 XKR in black, and then changed to a X150 XKR in red, both convertibles.

Although the older shape is attractive, it does show it's age now. The X150 is still a very fresh design , in my eyes anyways.

Bit like the DB7 vs everything else that came after it.

Designs of the time.

It's not just Jaguar MDs, our local MB dealer wouldn't quote for fluid change in LadyB8's Merc either "coz it's sealed for life" even though we knew there was a service note about it being done at 100K. One of the local Jag independents did it for us.

Well the local independent diagnosed the linear switch under the J gate, and changed it for one he had on the shelf. It lasted13 miles before "gearbox fault" .
I also asked him to drop the fluid and change the filter too, but he only charged me £40, which can't be right. The whole bill was £576.

So, it went back for another J gate, and seemed better for a couple of days, but the fault returned.

Fed up with this, I took it to a ZF authorized repair shop, who knew instantly what the issue is, the L1 signal line being short to earth in the rotary switch, so they ordered a new one from Germany, which should be here next Friday. He also said that he buys in the fluid at £15/litre, so £40 wouldn't go very far.

I have emailed the independent over the mis diagnosis, but he wants to discuss it verbally, rather than enter into a written conversation, I prefer something that I can refer back to whn I raise a dispute with the credit card company.

Those "sealed for life" gearboxes aren't sealed on the Mercedes they are used on I was told, but have a 50k service interval. Same box.

Someone at JLR decided to put a sticker on the Jaguar box to avoid people ordering parts from Mercedes is the story I was told...by a source very close to the issue at the time.

If true I can't believe they got away with it, or that anyone fell for it. All moving parts need oil changes, including and often overlooked differentials.

The gearbox on that Jag gave up around what, 90k?
Add oil changes and you'd stretch that to a good 150k.

That's interesting, I was told the Mercedes using that box had a 50k service interval, and that was by someone at JLR at the time?!?
Did Merc use the same stupid sticker on their gearboxes? The whole thing was laughable, a complete sham. Wonder how many people ended up losing gearboxes prematurely.

Guess it depends what 'Sealed for life' means. It could mean the life of the gearbox....

It sounds like your local indy is a cowboy and doesn't really know what he's doing. Hopefully you'll get your money back and highlights why it's best to pay with a CC. You may find joining the Jaguar XK8 club beneficial. Lots of knowledge and helpful people in the club. Their forum is a wealth of information. I had the plasure of meeting their chairman, Mike, at the weekend.

I'm not sure he is too interested. He will only discuss verbally, rather than by email, but he openly admitted that he had little interest in "classics" but that his bread and butter was 4 year old XF's and the like that needed servicing, tyres etc. A pity as he sells himself as a Jaguar specialist.
