Normally when I lock the car with the fob the windows fold in, but recently the mirrors sometimes do not fold in, any thoughts on where to start ?

You’ve stated potential problems. Do all the doors lock or not? It’ll probably be a door-closed sensor that’s causing it, and do you get a double-double chirp to say something isn’t closed?

I have only tried the drivers door, that does not lock, although you hear what sounds like the doors locking, and yes a few seconds later I get a double beep, where are these sensors and how do you identify the faulty one?

Everything is on CAN, diagnostics tool will show what's wrong

Could be the locking actuator. If you open the driver’s window, manually lock it from the outside does it lock then? If so there’s your workaround until fixed too by holding the lock button on the remote to close the window.

Have a look on jaginfo. There’s an x250 bug and irritations section that has a few posts.

I watched the manual lock operating and found 3 worked ok but no movement on drivers door, I will try tomorrow with the window down and see what happens

Tried as recomended with the window open and manually operated the drivers door lock, everything worked ok, all doors locked and the mirrors folded in, so I guess that points to the drivers actuator? Has anyone stripped the door down and what sort of job is it??

Nice one. There’s a few ‘how to’ threads on jaginfo. If you can’t find what you need, then join up, introduce yourself and ask. Helpful bunch, there’s also a Sunday club based in Stoke that will help out too for biscuits.

99% door latch has failed

Remove door card

Drop the window a bit, remove from regulator assembly and push up in closed position and tape in place with electrical tape

Remove window regulator assembly

There’s a small circle grommet in the door shut, remove this and there’s a T25 bolt in there that needs loosening but it stays in the car.

This will enable you to remove the small left part of the door handle (this should pull out of the door if you have the door handle in the open position)

You then have to pull the door handle open and push it towards the rear of the door and you’ll feel it come loose (if smart entry there’s a connector that needs disconnecting)

There’s a T20/25 bolt securing top portion of latch assembly to door.

There’s 2/3 connectors that need disconnecting on the door latch assembly

Remove T30s securing latch to door and you will find you more or less just twist and turn the whole thing out as one assembly

Disassemble latch assembly until it’s just the latch. There’s a rivet to drill out to remove the 2 parts so make sure you have a new rivet.

Reassemble latch and in the spirit of Haynes, assembly is reversal of disassembly.

But for those that don’t know “remove door card” isn’t an instruction that can be followed really is it? rolleyes

Well yes but no. I went on the assumption that finding a door card removal for an XF would be a fairly simple procedure to find.

The complex part of the job is the removal of the latch assembly itself

I just replaced both rear locks on my XFR after they stopped locking. The easiest way to tell they have failed is the locking nub above the internal handle won't move when you lock/un-lock. There is a great instructional video on Youtube that has the details of removing the door card and changing the mechanism.

It is possible to replace the lock mechanism without fully removing the window regulator although it is a bit fiddly. The rivet connecting the handle mechanism to the lock can be drilled out and replaced with cable ties as it is not structural.

It's very much a DIYable job. I found the parts from my local dealer to be cheaper than other sources.

Tools I needed was:

Torx set: T20, T25 & T30
Trim removal pliers (easier than normal trim spatula type tools)
Drill with 5mm bit
Cable Ties

Thanks for the info, I am away on holiday at the moment so no time to strip down yet, but one thing I have noticed is that sometimes it still works, what is the normal actual failure in the actuator?, is being intermittent normal or is it usually a good or bad situation ??

Mine very occasionally worked too. I would say intermittent locking is a sign it will completely fail sooner rather than later.
