5.0R is much better car than 4.2 but less reliable engine (tensioners and water pumps). I'd still have a 5.0 though wink

Depends on what you want from the car, for me, the 4.2 is the one to have, bullet proof engine and a true grand tourer, the 5 ltr is moving more to wards the sports car ideal, it was developed to attract younger owners eventually leading to the F type.

Once I've sold my XJ I'll have a similar budget. Having been initially wary of a 5.0, I've now spoken to my friendly Jag specialist, and he says it's around £2.4k to fix the tensioners, so not that bad really. The 5.0 also has the option of Bowers & Wilkins stereo and DAB, if that's an issue. 5.0XKR is 503bhp compared to the 4.2 with 420bhp.

Thanks...
I'm thinking the 5.0 (Cause why wouldn't you)

Apparently in 2010 a few issues were ironed out ?

So 2010 maybe black edition with low mileage

Bit more than 20k I guess

Decent ones do pop up under £20k, take this one I spotted the other day; 31k miles and with the speed pack by the looks of it. Sold already though.

Do you mind me asking who your specialist is? I've been trying to find someone who may take on that sort of work.
Thank you,
Tom

I like the 5.0, more aggressive styling than the 4.2

I currently have a 4.2 x100 but I've been considering a 5.0, trouble is that I don't think I'll be able to use the extra power apart from on a track or for very small bursts

That said, I haven't driven one so it might ride differently / be better inside which may justify the extra outlay regardless of additional power

It's a bugger, when you want to say 'My car has a supercharger' but you don't want 500+bhp that will put you backwards through a hedge the moment you take your eye off the ball.

I prefer the softer styling of the 4.2, but the blingier interior of the 5.0.

I have owned a 2010 5.0L XKR for the past 7 years. It is undoubtedly the best automobile I've ever owned among dozens in over 50 years of driving. The 5.0L engine w/supercharger is a tour de force. The tensioner issue has been extremely rare. But the water pump issue is real. I've had 5!. I have over 160,000 miles on my car and it's still quicker and more nimble than my 500hp Pantera. One caution, make sure to check oil on a very regular basis. Since there is no dipstick, you have to check electronically which is a pain. I simply check almost every morning before I start the car. I change oil every 3-5000 miles. Also extremely important is to have a fully charged battery by either driving it a lot or using a maintainer at night. If the battery isn't fully charged you'll get lots of erroneous warnings on the dash that will scare you but will all be related to low battery voltage. These cars are the best high performance bargain on the market today, bar none! You will love it.

I have a 2010 XKR 5.0L S/C Convertible. I echo everything that tberg has said above. Mine has now done just over 100k and feels and looks like it's done a fraction of that. Only issue I've had in about 30k miles is the s/c snout coupler, which I replaced my self. The car will happily sit outdoors for 3 weeks untouched although if I leave it any longer than that I plug in a maintainer just to be sure.

I know the water pumps have a reputation. I've had no issues on this engine, however my Range Rover has the same engine and the only thing that's gone wrong with that one was the water pump. So be wary of any coolant loss and get it checked quick. On the RR, the time between noticing a drop in coolant and it completely stting the water pump on the motorway was about a week, a few hundred miles.

Also agree on the oil, these will use a little. I've tended to NOT check mine very often like tberg and when I've eventually got round to it after a few months I've been surprised that it's taken 2.5 litres to get back to the max.!! I'm not sure how low the oil needs to get to to trigger a warning, but it must be pretty low! smile

I don't change oil as often as tberg, I do mine about every 10k, but it is the easiest job in the world; oil is sucked out via the filler aperture, new filter banged in, refill. Takes about 20 minutes and all done from above the engine. No need to crawl around underneath.

But other than the S/C coupler I can't think of anything other than consumables that I've had to fix in 30k miles. Oh, one rubber boot on one of the rear control arms. That's it. I've probably properly jinxed it now! smile

ETA.... I had an older XKR with the 4..0L engine, the precursor to the 4.2. Although a great engine the 5.0L is just another league in performance and responsiveness, you need only tickle the pedal to get things moving and it just keeps accelerating harder as you push the pedal further. Really quite addictive , especially when you've got the dynamic exhaust open and the top down! smile

I'm very confused about my XKR ownership (2010 5.0 supercharged)

Previous car was a Z4 Coupe, the next car was an XF Sportbrake 3.0 (dog carrier)

I loved the drama of the XKR but the Z4 was more fun on the A/B roads.

The XF was more relaxing on long journeys.

I had a drive in a F-Type R coupe, it felt claustrophobic.

I drove my mates V8 Vantage a few times. It felt slow.

At the end of the day it is a wonderful car, just think what you want from it.
